Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I had a pet skunk when i was a kid, pretty much acted like a cat. Ate catfood & used a litterbox. You could pick him up by the scruff of his neck, shake your finger & say Daniel be ashamed & he would cover his eyes with his paws. I took him to school for 4th grade show & tell. That was fun. Now dont get me wrong i don't want any anywhere near my hens.
I have heard they make great pets and I will have to admit, they are cute. But, after two Springs ago when one dug under my coop and tore to shreds (didn't even eat much) 12 BCM shipped in from Bethel Plantation that were still sleeping on the ground, well, death to all skunks on my farm!

Here's some updated pictures of my marans. Looking like everyone who said cockerel was the winners. Now my question is, will he turn blue, or was his egg mis-marked to be blue (but actually black?) His feathers are black, not grayish or bluish at all. He is 5 weeks old and he's almost covered in emerging adult feathers. So, my question is, BLUE OR BLACK????

sorry to give you a "butt shot" but his fluff is dark too.

yeah, my grandma had pet raccoons when my dad was a kid and my parents had a pet skunk that someone had descented and they took him in since the people were just going to dump him back in the wild. Only my oldest brother was around at the time and the skunk was just a young one, so it used to hide under the couch and shoot out to attack my brother's feet. He said the nails were like needles. And like you, I don't want anything around my birds that can do them harm of any kind.
I almost had the chance to get a clear photo of the giant male owl we have hanging around tonight, until I saw this dang possum go running across the lawn. Managed to get him into the trap pretty quick tho, but by that time the owl was gone already. Hope to get a shot of the owl to post on here tho, he's just a beast.

I love that photo!!
We caught one raccoon the night before last in a live trap. I caught him using an egg lol. I thought it was a possum going after eggs but I guess not this time.
He was only half grown and you could see that the momma had dug furiously around the trap trying to get him out. I almost felt sorry for him (okay I DID feel sorry for him lol) poor baby. Its a good thing dh does the dispatching of them around here. I have a hard time doing anything to the small ones who are cute lol.

haha thanks. I have some other photos of them somewhere. I always laugh when people ask me how I got into raising animals and why I have a way with them. Suppose you can't help it if you were born into a family of animal people haha

I have some eggs cooking now. I have 3 solid black marans eggs (collected those before the stupid EE roo got into the pen grr),
3 blk coppers, 2 blue coppers, 5 Golden cuckoos, 2 blue-golden cuckoo, 4 lemon cuckoo marans, 2- blk birchen hen x solid blk marans roo eggs, a few doz. lavender orpingtons, 4 lavender silkies. I was mainly gonna do the lav orp eggs this time but squeezed in various marans eggs and a few silkies as well lol.

The black broody, Miss Boots, still has her eggs too. They should hatch in a few weeks. She did have more eggs but she kicked a few out

. She is so evil right now, she won't let me near her to count them lol. I didn't exactly write down the date she finally started sitting solidly, so I guess it will be a surprise haha.
I am actually hoping for several decent black cockerals! Miss Boots has really nicely feathered shanks and so does the roo so I am excited to see what their next chicks look like. They hatched a really nice black pullet last time.
They had more chicks but that was the only one that survived when it flooded last spring and everyone got cocci. DH is building some more chick brooders that are a few feet up off the ground for this spring so that doesn't ever happen again. I am going to move her and her chicks into another brooder that is already built, once she hatches this bunch out. I'm afraid if I move her now she will quit sitting.
