Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I have no personal experience but a neighbor tells me they are good with grits and greens. I'm thinking NO WAY!

Hello! I'm looking to get some more Marans and I was wondering if anyone here is local to the California Central Coast? I don't hatch eggs and I only want a few chicks so can't ship. I already posted in the California thread, I was just covering all my bases by posting direct to the Marans page too. Thanks for any info!

A couple of days ago I toe punched my first BCM hatchlings of the season. I used the little toe punch you can buy, not a leather punch which I also have. I removed the skin flap. The holes are scabbed over now. Should I push the scab out or leave it be?

I have some eggs cooking now. I have 3 solid black marans eggs (collected those before the stupid EE roo got into the pen grr),
3 blk coppers, 2 blue coppers, 5 Golden cuckoos, 2 blue-golden cuckoo,  4 lemon cuckoo marans, 2- blk birchen hen x solid blk marans roo eggs, a few doz. lavender orpingtons, 4 lavender silkies.  I was mainly gonna do the lav orp eggs this time but squeezed in various marans eggs and a few silkies as well lol.

I wish you would send me a couple of those solid black eggs :fl My solid Splash need the company of a Black so I can make Solid Blues! :bow :drool :love

The black coppers I have are French standard. A little background before I ask my question. I'm wanting to bring in another line of birds to improve my pens. I gent that I've dealt with, won't name for privacy, has black coppers that I like when I contacted him about buying eggs he told me about bring in a new line of english standard black coppers, and talked about how superior the egg color is.
My question, is there any other difference between French and English standard other than the leg feathering? I can't seem to find information about this online other than vague information. Are the standards for egg color different? Is there any big stop sign with possibly crossing of the two standards. Went on the MOAC site to see if they compared the two. Seen some beautiful eggs, and read and reread the standard, but in truth, is the "english" style of black copper just a sales pitch or is it valid?
Thanks

Hello to all
I am a rookie first timer with hatching eggs.I just received Marans eggs today this am I was suppose to get more eggs from a different supplier but the plan didn't come together so I need your advise the second batch of eggs is coming tomorrow so they will be 24 hrs apart.Should I wait on the first batch that have been setting for 12 hrs and put them in the bator tomorrow night after the second batch settles for 12 hrs. These are shipped eggs.I also have a broody buff orp that I could possibly bring in the house and put her in a extra extra large dog crate with and put a nest box and food and water is that something people have done. Please help me through our first hatching attempt by the way my wife came up with the bring Buffy in the house deal.

Thank you all so much

If it were me, since they are shipped eggs, I would use the incubator, but that all depends on how well your orp stays broody. If she is already proven that sticks with it really well, she would be an option then. Waiting to put shipped eggs in until both batches have had a chance to rest from shipping is fine. I have waiting sometimes 3 or 4 days and had no problems other than the norm for shipping eggs.
