Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Yes all would be blue copper. Black X Splash gives blue; black X blue gives blue and black; blue X blue gives, black, blue, and splash; blue X splash gives blue and splash.

New pics.. I found the very end of a single saddle feather with very Wheaton in color! Of course I go to get a pic and could not find it! I know he has a sprig there in his comb boo but are the eyes a good color? He was very squearmy today so didn't get much but the full body pic was taken about 2/13 @ 4mos so he's just over 5mos now

Hi all! I am new to the site and new to chicken keeping :) We brought home nine chicks a week ago, two of whom are supposed to be Black Copper Marans. These two were two weeks old on Saturday. As they have feathered out more, we have noticed that their coloring is very different. Any thoughts on this? Do we have two different genders, types, or is this a normal variation? The chick in the first photo has lots of copper speckles on her feathers, earning it the name Turkey ;) Number two is strictly black and white with a few copper feathers coming in around the neck. Here are some pics:

Thanks!! I am so curious to see how they will turn out!

My guess is you have two pullets but even after raising BCM for 5 years they still surprise me!!! The first one is "mossy" in her colouring. With the assumption that she is a girl, they often lay really dark eggs but are not good for breeding (unless you are just raising dark egg layers for fun) or showing as the mossiness is not correct colouring as per the Standard of Perfection for BCM. Number two sure looks pullet to me but if you say the little tyke already has a few copper feathers coming in around the neck, that would indicate boy to me at this age.

The first chick is exhibiting mossiness, that's the speckles you were referring to. My guess is that chick is carrying the wheaton gene. The second chick looks more like a black copper should.

Hey everyone new on this thread looking for a red egg layer and heard marans are my best bet thoughts? Anyone
Some of my Welsummer eggs:

Black Copper Marans Eggs, one Hen, you can see even shade various with particular hen herself:

Daughter of above Hen lays these:

I would say that both breeds lay "reddish" type eggs, I would describe them more as dark brown, the Welsummers often have speckles but I culled down to two pullets this year that are laying a pretty dark brown egg, almost as dark as my BCM. Really depends on the pullet/hen as to the exact shade so unless you buy a laying pullet/hen and can see her particular egg before you buy, you really have no idea what egg colour shade you are going to get. Some Welsummers and Marans that have been poorly bred lay a very light brown egg...........
