Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Snow! That stinks! Sure puts a damper on working outside.
yeah, it sure does. Working on getting the last of the seeds going inside, mostly flowers and a few more herbs this time. When its closer to frost free, I'll do the squash, melons and cucumbers so they can get a jump on the squash bugs. I always have a ton of other things going on as well, particularly with the poultry club as I have a meeting coming up and getting birds ready to sell. Should be my last round to go before I'm down to just what I will use for breeding season.

Sounds like you are busy for sure!
Hope the weather gets in gear for you soon. I am itching to get out in the garden again but the rain has been pretty much non-stop for several days putting a huge damper on getting anything done out there, but on the brighter side the green house is booming! Going to start some more things today. Having an unusually hard time starting Acorn squash this year.

Oh and it's official.....Roberta the Splash Copper hen is now over a year old and still has not laid an egg yet. She's making me crazy! Okay, okay....I know I was crazy prior to this hen, but she's not helping matters any! LOL!

haha poor Roberta! How old are the acorn seeds you have?

Poor Roberta!?!? LOL! I don't think she understands what she is putting me through. Don told me not to worry to much about her taking her time that sometimes show fowl just take their sweet time, I am trying so very hard to cling to that. :)

The Acorn seeds are from last year, nice and fresh. Out of 20 seeds only 3 started the first time. Out of another 20 seeds......none started the second time. Hoping the 3rd time is a charm. My golden Acorns are a whole nuther story.......they are taking off like no-ones business.

haha I was being cheeky about Roberta, I'm sure it is stressful, especially since you culled down so heavily.
I wonder if the seeds just aren't viable, I've had that happen from time to time

I know you were being cheeky, no worries. I think she is just having a great time being a freeloader and she has no intention of working for her up keep just yet. :)

Very possible on those seeds.....good thing I have tons of them to keep trying with.
Planted 300 hundred Walla Walla's the other day.....now if the birds would leave them alone. Dang Robins and Blue Jays keep knocking them over every day. Every morning I am out there standing them back up. :p

I hate that. I have had problems like that before, as well as problems with my own birds thinking its awesome to pluck up the onions and leave them laying around the garden when they sneak in

Forgot to add, I have onions sitting on my desk waiting to be planted. Got them in the mail, but its been too wet to plant, hoping for this weekend to get them out there, even tho I'll be busy. I ordered about 350, but got sent closer to 1,000. I've been able to give some to friends and such to reduce the numbers, but will still be planting about 500 or so I would guess, plus the leeks. The place I got them from has good variety and cheaper than I can grow them myself, so figured I'd go this route this year.
