Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

ok I have my first ever batch, only a dozen, Maran eggs in the bator. I am hearing stories about hatching maran and am a little fearful. Is there anything I am missing? I assumed a chick egg was a chick egg.

I've never hatched my Maran eggs any differently than I have all my other eggs. The only difference is that they are difficult to candle. Some people do not even try to candle them. But besides that, I really have not noticed any difference.

Just candled them tonight. Looks like 1 infertile eggs and possible 1 blood ring. The rest look pretty good

I am pretty excited for these Marans to hatch. I went back and forth between several breeds before I decided on Marans.

Correct me if I am wrong, I believe a "low station" is like a Dorking. A "medium Station" is like a Rhode Island Red and a "high station" is like a Langshan.
APA defines "Station" as, "A term applied to the ideal pose and symmetrical appearance, including height and reach in Modern Games.".
Best,
Karen

Thanks for the explanation,,, greatly appreciated.

ordered a dozen on ebay of black copper marans, received 14 eggs (2 extras). put them on the incubator and they hatched 5 days ago. got 7 chicks out of the 14 eggs. hopefully i have a roo and some females......fingers crossed.....

and, hopefully you got lucky and got eggs from some decent stock,,, unlike some of the ebay adventures some of us had early on ! ebay can be a real gamble.

Ray, the term Station would also have something to do with the length of Shanks. We had a person on BYC that bred for the lower station Marans. I see nothing wrong with this as I myself like the higher station Marans. We have to use some of our likes and dislikes or what is the use just doing what someone else says is the correct way to do anything. As long as we get to where we want to be with them use whatever method you would like.

Thanks Don,,,, I see variation in the young I have at the moment,,,, sometimes it seems the shorter legged young have wider leg set, more space between,, I tend to like that, birds seem to be wider, not sure how it relates, but at this stage they are definitely different from the longer legged ones. I like the width, not sure how I like the short legs though. Can't wait to see how they mature, plan to keep them around even as a learning experience. Besides, most are pullets, so that makes it easier to keep them around longer.

Anyone have any chicks hatching this weekend? I will be getting the incubator going again and hopefully get the eggs in by the beginning of next week, just waiting on the packages to arrive and to collect some more eggs out of my girls before then. Will shoot to get a few update shots of chicks today, that is if they will stay still long enough. They are still pretty quiet, but zip around so dang fast!

, this was first out of the blue Roo I have,,, some nice beefier chicks,, alot of variation in the chicks colors,, some mostly dark, while others are very "penguin" looking,,, a few have white all the way around their eyes again.

The last hatch had a couple like this as well. I marked them because they came from some of the darker eggs and I wanted to follow them. One seems to be a roo, the other a pullet. Both seem to be getting mossy.

Wonder what the link here is related to..... Wheaten gene ??? Doubt it's the Roo,,,, 2 different roos, one blue copper, one black copper..

I was so hoping to get some splash chicks out of this hatch,, got 5 lighter blues, not sure how many darker ones,, but, no splash, guess I'll have to give it another shot !
