Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Ok, so I am new to the Marans (two months) but I like em'! I am hoping to have some broody girls this spring so, what is this "broody wagon thing"? I am interested!

"On the 3rd day of Christmas my true love gave to me: Three French Hens..." Broody blue and black copper ones at that lol !! Oh dear, I think I need to make that broody wagon thing that someone posted. It sounds like the perfect thing. Maybe I should make a couple.

Hi you Maran Experts, I am in need of some help please. Here are a few pics of some French Wheaten Marans. Keep in mind this is not them looking their best. Can you please tell me if these are of good quality or just some average birds? Pullet. 12 weeks old. Rooster. one of the hens- This is one of the Maran eggs (front) with an Australorp (left) and Ancona egg(right). This is not the darkest egg she's had they have just gone off season (so eggs lighten) they usually lay 6+.
HI! Welcome to the Marans thread! The young Wheatens are too young to make a judgement on their quality. Give them a couple more months. The male looks to have maybe too high of a tail. Do you have more photos? The hen's coloring is my favorite things about Wheatens...I just love that body color.

OK I will put a few pics up. I will PM you more later... maybe tomorrow. Daddy probably Son - I like his tail set, nice open tail. The only thing I wish is he was not as light in the lower hackles, but that might be a good thing? Add color to the pullets???? Just for an idea of shape. He is not standing naturally. Tail is a little higher than it really is. It would be nice if he were as wide at the back as he is at the front. That is the way his dad is too. I need some REALLY wide pullets LOL
Me loves me some of that 1st Blue Copper rooster! :love Is that the one you got from Becky? Too bad that BCM male narrows at the back end...he sure is a wide load across the shoulders.

Yeah that is your roo. He is my survivor. Just growing out some posible replacement. You wouldn't use the black roo? They both narrow some at the back.

I am two years into my "chicken project" and have yet to see a broody hen... all I can say is I am totally excited at the idea of a hen clucking about the yard with little chicks behind her... I will be grinning from ear to ear! I even took in a banty in hopes of a little broodiness around here... nothing, nada...sigh.

bantam wyandottes make fantastic broodies, nearly all of the hens I have will go broody at one point or another each season.

Newbie here
Can you tell me what I should be looking for in regards to sexing my 2 week old Blue copper marans.Any help would be appreciated .

Geez, I can't remember now LOL! I think a broody wagon was something someone made to break a broody from being broody. Had a wire floor and could be pulled into the run/pen due to having wheels on it. The idea with the hen not having a nest box perhaps she wouldn't be broody. Anyone else remember that? I think it might have been from the OLD First Marans Thread.
I never did make one. I get lots of broody Marans hens here but some people say theirs don't go broody. Mine all seem to go broody in pairs around here as well. Must be something in the water lol.
I have one EE with one chick that is a few days old, running around. She beat the crap out of one of the male muscovy ducks yesterday that is more than twice her size for getting too close to her chick.. One of the free ranging male cuckoo Marans thinks its his chick (its not) and keeps feeding it lol. So totally cute.
One of my black Marans hens just went broody recently as well. Ya I think I still need to make one of those broody wagons.

Really!!.... take some of mine. Seems I can't keep my Marans from going broody. And the one Silky hen I have always looks half starved by the end of fall, from being broody all summer and even broody while molting... silly girl.
