Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

It is broad spectrum.  It is absorbed through the skin. One dose and you are done.  There is a withdrawal time not sure what it is though.... I hatch all my eggs so I don't worry about it.

I have never wormed my birds with any OTC wormer, but have read the bottle of wormer that my bestfriend was using when she first started out with chickens, it stated a 10 day withdraw time frame for eating eggs and or if the birds were going to be processed for meat. We have a friend who makes all natural human and horse products so we both use it once a month both for ourselves which is the liquid form and for the birds which comes to us in the form of a sludge from the bottom of the barrel of her product, so we do not withdraw eggs.

I have treated my birds with an antibiotic a couple years ago for cocci and I withdrew the eggs for almost 3 weeks. My BFF thought I was nutz......but I just can't stand the thought of any residuals, I figure better safe than sorry, so I pull eggs longer than need be.

Mornin' Kim!

Long time no see it seems! Got any chickers hatching over there? I'm willing the time to fly by so I can see what I get out of those I set.

Morning!

Had a great hatch of 15 babies.....13 blues and 2 black so I guess I now know that my rooster is black and not dark blue. The babies are fat and healthy. Got some lovely shades of blue. One died yesterday and of course it had to be the lightest prettiest blue one in the brooder. :( I was sooooo looking forward to seeing what that one was going to be like when matured.

I have 6 goslings in lockdown due to hatch on Thursday and 8 more goose eggs cookin'. 13 Marans eggs from the Betty-z, all doing great set to hatch in about 2 weeks. 10 eggs from the Splash Copper that I borrowed back from my BFF and my Splash Coppers last eggs before she went broody, I don't think they are doing anything by looking into them. The 2 goose eggs under her or goners, I think the other 2 gals in her coop were bothering her and she has now stopped trying to sit on the eggs. They must have broke another egg in the process as the goose eggs were covered with yolk. I tossed them.

Looking forward to seeing what the babies in the brooder are going to be like.

My sister is expecting her very first hatch ever of duck eggs today. I have been talking her through the incubation process every single day. Every morning she calls with a new concern and worried about the incubator and the eggs, LOL! Gotta love it! I remember my first incubation and the worries I had. She will be hooked from here on in and I know I saw a collection of chickens eggs on her counter the other day that were being turned and had been marked. YEP, she's hooked for sure!

Got the other blue hen from my friend this past weekend and she is now on clean out and quarantine. I am going to single mate her to Lil' Bill to start out, then will try her with the black roo.
Cleaning out the Splash from my friend again and will test her to Lil' Bill as well.

The project Blue Laced Barnevelder pen is up and running again as well. Borrowed one of my original Barnie roos back from friend as well. :D I'm a glutton for punishment. LOL! Can't wait until both of the new birds Lynda my BFF brought up to be done with quarantine so that I can get to incubating.

I hope your hatch is great Vicki, I know you have been itchin' to hatch for sometime now. Babies are soooooo much fun.

I read somewhere to use tincture of black walnut.. but i've never tried it

Black Walnut is one of the main ingredients that is in the natural wormer that I get and use. I also know that cinnamon is the other main ingredient but I cannot tell you any other ingredients as the friend who makes it will not tell. Will tell you that the human liquid form is NASTY on the taste buds for sure, but the birds seem to know it is coming and they goble the sludge mixture right up. Makes the coops smell like Christmas baking for days after they eat it.

Since I have been raising chickens and using this sludge I have never seen a worm in feces, eggs or the bird itself after it has been processed for meat.

That's a great hatch Kim! Sounds like you are well on the way to getting the test mating process going. Would love to see a photo of the blue gal when you get a chance! I need to finish taking photos of all my breeding stock so I can have them on file for the year. Just have to find some time somewhere for that.
And you are right! I've been fighting the urge to hatch since last fall, so now that it's here, I'm soooo impatient! I can't wait to see what will hatch and how they will grow.

Been very busy here as big changes are coming in our lives due to a career change for my dear hubby. Preparations are endless, LOL! Trying to get everything that needs to be done, done, but everytime we turn around there is one more thing, LOL!

Hope everyone is doing great!

Congratulations to the egg show winners! That's AWESOME!
