Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I am hatching out my first set of Cuckoo Marans eggs. Although the eggs are still dark, I notice they are lighter than the FBCMs. I'm wondering if I would be able to candle these. Has anyone been able to candle Cuckoo Maraans?

These are two of my Marans eggs. That dirty one came from a new layer who just didn't make it to the box. :) Busy with new hatches and a few new acquisitions. Trying to keep up with my threads but.... too many things in the Spring to keep track of.

Yes you can candle ANY egg, blue or white. The only eggs that are almost impossible are the Olive Eggs. Between the dark of the Marans and the dark of the Blue eggs it makes it very hard to see in those eggs. But sometimes you get lucky and you can see the air cell

Thank you Zanna. After two weeks of them getting into a rhythm and now this new egg I am feeling a little better about their potential genetically. I haven't culled anyone yet, despite their flaws. I am going to see if I can't selectively pair them so they cancel out each other's flaws or at least compensate for them.
