Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Hello,
I am interested in French Cuckoo Marans that lay very dark eggs. No goldens please. Located in CA but will pay shipping if necessary. Looking for good quality birds.

Im not positive but I don't think that link is an accurate colored egg chart at least its not representing the dark browns as they should.

The picture below is a picture of my actual egg chart I bought from the marans club website and the colors are much much darker. Notice the eggs are much darker than the eggs in the link above. Of course pictures posted online show up different on everyones screens but this chart is what you would be looking for.

I have a question regarding bcms I am interested in the breed. I presently have a community coop w 16 birds the coop is plenty big I am wondering if I introduced bcm roo and hens would I be able to distiguish there eggs(bcm roo x bcm hen) from say bcm roo X rri hen ? would crossing a bcm roo and another brown egg layer produce chocolate egg? Or should I build a second smaller coop for the roo and send the girls there. Thanks in advance for your input.

If you want to breed purebred birds, separate them into another pen. Egg color is dependent on many different genes for dark brown. If your BCM are quality and lay a darker egg you will be able to tell them apart. In our experience crossing the Marans with other brown layers get you egg color somewhere in between, but not nearly as dark as the pure Marans. Get yourself a Marans egg color chart, as anything else is just guessing.

Just wanted to add- we purchased this exact chart too.... See the hazy grayish cast on the tops of eggs 1, 2, and 3? (It is on other eggs on that chart as well, but these are the easiest to spot.)

This means this chart is a color copy of the French version, and was not calibrated at a professional printer's for color. So, this particular version is not a reliable representation of colors. (Husband's a professional graphic artist...he knows.) Not color calibrated= worthless. When we asked them about this issue, they said they printed at Staples.

There is a chart out there that is brought to a professional printer, and egg colors are approved by Bev, herself so there is consistency between printings. It's the chart that you get when joining the chicken club. Just ask when purchasing if the chart you're to purchase is a color copy of the French chart. There is a huge quality difference.
