Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Sounds like they got the term Marans mixed up with Fabergé!

I guess I'm kind of a newbie, but common sense dictates that a chick should cost more than an egg...I mean, on one hand you have a chance to hatch a chick and on the other you have a guaranteed live chick. I guess the only downside is that you can't see the egg color. Correct me if I'm wrong, also, but I've spent some time drooling over Bev's site and it looks like she still sells eggs. Does she (or Bev, if you are here, do you?) or is it out of date? I mean, I think I'd be willing to pay more for birds directly out of her hands than from a flock she worked with.

Bev has teamed up with Greenfire farms to act as her shipping / hatching agent. I seriously wonder if she is aware of the $26 PER EGG charge . . . . .

Bev is concentrating on breeding new lines and improving old lines. Greenfire has mature marans that she has delivered and is breeding, collecting, hatching, and shipping those chicks. . . .

It is a shame that their prices have gone through the roof this year and have now reached the point of being unreasonable (IMO).

I WISH Bev was still selling. I contacted her right after she started sending her business to Greenfire farms.

There are a some breeders on here that I will be buying from. I was hoping to do it through greenfire because I could DRIVE and pick the eggs up WITHOUT shipping them. I worry about have eggs shipped in from 10 states away

, BUT I will do what I have to do.

I just wanted a reality check to see if I was REAL Offbase with this

Math...a one time offer just for you... I have a Blue Copper Hen (out of Whitmore Farm) who lays a beautiful dark egg. She is bred to a BCM with a nice coloring, comb and size, but lacks leg
feathering, and has a higher tail set than I'd like. She does not have any coppering on her hackles, but was born with a copper spot (as are some of her offspring) on her head, and I'm sure
she is genetically Copper...the pair throws 70% or so feathered chicks and they are turning out very nice...good lacing, nice sized, more coppering..too early to tell egg color on offspring. She
is amazingly productive though, and has been laying since early January 4-6 eggs a week non-stop. Egg color is lighter than in the early months, of course, but still pretty nice.

I am pleased with the pullets hatched from her, not so much with the one roo. If you are looking for better egg color, her offspring may help you here. Email me for pics.
I'm close to you I think, and will give you her eggs laid over the next week or two if you want to make the 2 or less hour drive. Right now I'm enjoying these sunny side up.

I'm not ready to sell these, but the offspring are looking really nice. I know you have Bev's line, and are looking to stick with this, but my girl has got productivy and dark eggs...
and free to you, as you are so close and I need feedback resulting crossing lines.

And..it would be nice to meet a fellow chicken/Marans enthusiast...let me know.

Though my girls have slowed down, and the egg color is getting lighter - they are still putting out some decent eggs. Just took this photo - of course, inside with lighting and flash washed them out.

Someone is driving from 5 hours away to come get these (and a second dozen) tomorrow.

Now that I know Greenfire Farms is charging $26 per EGG/ $312 per dozen - I'll have to seriously raise my prices after these last two dozen are sold. I'm mean, geez......

And to think I was selling these for a mere $45 per dozen.

Math Ace We in the west like the BEST!!!! ha ha... Heck ya... shipping is great... I have gotten lots of eggs from all over... Atlanta shipped me babies.... every one of them was in great health.... AWESOME STUFF with our PO!!!

Mossy can molt out...not always but sometimes... depends on the degree and of course, the genes.

Wow... I am a nice guy... I was giving some away and charging 35 a dozen for mine.. (I think I have sold 3 dozen ever!!!).... I am a big egg dealer..ha ha ha. It's all good.

There are all sorts of prices out there. Charles Logan sells his for $100 per dozen. I sell mine, through my website, at $75 per dozen. I've sold them on BYC as low as $10 per dozen so that my BYC "friends" can enjoy these beautiful birds. And, of course, I've given many away.

Edited to add: I'd be willing to bet there are people out there paying Greenfire's prices. When selling just about anything - It's all about marketing and name recognition. Many, many people buying BCMs have absolutely zero interest in APA, showing, or conformation - they just want the dark eggs.

Ruth... not 26 dollars per egg.... go back and read... Geez folks...

I think that is a chick price and one that is likley to price them out of the marketplace... One has to ask themselves why they are doing what they do and wiegh the ethics... I personally am enjoying the project... You all can price em for 100 dollar per look if ya like... Doesn't mean someone wants to see...

People support the marketplace or they don't...

Oh my flock is well documented... They are single bred and marked from egg to adulthood... specific hatches from no more than 4 hens at a time. But thank for asking and I take pictures of the roosters with their egg. So that later if it is worth passing on... I can print a photo for the new owner.
