Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I have some splash marans which are beautiful and should be laying shortly but now I have a dilemma.....I know that the splashes would eventually fade out and I don't want that to happen..... I thought I had a black marans hen to put with them or a solid blue one....I do not..... If I mate the male splash to a black copper marans that has very little coppering if any. would I be able to move into a blue marans or what would I have? Would the coppering come out as a recessive? I don't want to just end up with a mess:(

My splashs do not have any coppering..... (They are beautiful and have wonderful lineage)....

What are the best suggestions? How can I get the BBS marans I want?

I'm thinking I need to get black marans hens of great quality. Is that the best solution?

Thanks so much and have a blessed day.

sewandgrow . . . wynette is saying what I pm you about - - - NEED some CLOSE-UP's to give you good opinion on the birds.
Have your daughter hit the POST button at the bottom of this page and then upload button at top of this page.

Then she needs to copy and paste images ( new ones - - close ups) like she did before . . . into your post.

Then hit submit button.

POST a HELLO or ANYTHING in this thread so that I know you are getting this message . . . . .

Hi Don

I would do as you say, part with those females, the males could still be carrying it. I would either use the male you got from Ron or try to get another male from the same line that isn't carrying the wheaten gene, there are a lot out there. From what I have heard the signs are red on the breasts of both males and females, light colored legs and brown fluff under the tail.

The best of luck

Bev

Bev, thanks thats what I was going to do. Yes you are right about the faults they exhibit. They do really lay a dark egg though and I suppose that is what they were after when they bred them this way. I have already culled the males and culled all the males with white in wing and tail and also white undercolor in the hackle. really a wasted year but I have some really big broad back female to work with this winter, but only a very few males.

Dear Friends,

This is a new member who had her daughter do the posting of the pictures. She posted them in the wrong section and pm me when she didn't get a response. Somehow she is following our postings on this thread BUT posted the pictures on another thread.

Please, take a moment and say "HI" to sewandgrow AND if you have time check out her pictures . . . . She is hatching babies as we speak and wants some feedback on the parent stock.

Thanks

Math Ace

From what I see these are more then likely Wade Jeane bred Marans, the male looks to have good color , but the comb appears to be laying on the neck. Look at the soft feathers under the vent, they appear to be brown colored like the the ones I was asking Bev Davis about, I would not breed the brown feathered birds if I wanted anything but some to lay dark eggs.

I don't have time to go back and read them all right now... Did you post some pix on a website you were making... I would like to see it so if you would put the link up I would go and peruse it...

LOL Geeb, I was thinking the same thing about me! Glad to see that you fell off too and good to "read" your voice

Rusty: I am revamping "Wonka"... I will NOT have my birds with mud on them this year.... I have downsized an incredible amount... You would all be shocked!!! I abandoned secret project because I didnt' like the genetic picture I was seeing so... That reduced my numbers dramatically. I am using 2 roos... (one is in reserve and not serviceing yet..)... I have 16 hens that were worthwhile.. THat is all that made the cut...

I had one started but after seeing some of the other names canceled the site out because it was too similiar to another marans site. I have another one but no pictures yet. From the way things are looking I could post about any of my Marans and say the faults. I think I have the market cornered at the present time on culls.

Don,

Everyone's birds have faults! Your culls are probably much better than my future breeders! We all have to start somewhere
