I asked that question once before too but it didn't get answered. My take on it is that yes they can hold it either way and even straight if they want to but 99% of the time his tail is held to the left angle that you see in that photo and sometimes even more to the left depending on what he is doing. He even carries it to the left while walking, running and playing. The only times I have seen it straight up is when he was a little younger and thought he was man enough to stand up to Gnarles.
