I am supposed to be getting a clean legged Rooster this weekend from a guy at the Newnan show but he said he had some feather legged ones too. I may just tell him I would prefer the feather legged one instead. I was gonna trade him a Salmon Faverolle Hen for a Cockoo Maran Rooster. Is that a good trade?

I would say that it is a good trade, providing that it is a good Rooster. I am not as familiar with the "standards" or, that is, what you should be looking for in a Rooster. To me, a good Rooster is a bird that I look at and immidiately say to myself (or out loud) "That is a good Rooster". I look for overall size, large chest, good, full tail that is "perky" nice feet and legs that are not "scaly", good eyes that are symmetrical...these are the things that I look for, but like I said, almost everyone on here is more knowledgeable about Marans than I am.

I know what you mean Pink, the boys do hold my heart. Even Mr. Meanbutt, aka Pip. Despite his nasty tude, he makes me laugh out loud with his "angry roo" dance!

He gets even madder when I laugh at him too!

Mornin' all. Its looking to be a fantastic day out...so I'm finding myself spending a lot of time in the garden doing prep work for the season coming. It got me to thinking about treats I can grow for my birds. What are some of your favorite treats to give your Marans? I have a few plants in mind for them, but am always looking for new ideas.

Mine went NUTS for cherry tomatoes last year! I also bought them a pumpkin after Halloween was over, still wasn't cheap, but they demolished it in a couple of hours! All that was left was two small pieces of shell, and the pecked on stem

So I'll be sure to raise more cherry toms, and will make a small seperate patch of pie pumpkins for them this year. They also ate cukes, and jalapenos. They liked the peppers better when they turned red.

jalapenos? really? that's awesome! i got pumpkins from a friend last fall and used them throughout the winter when i made up a hot mash on the really cold days...and butternuts i grew when i had run out of pumpkin. i found a place that sold cayenne pepper seeds so i bought those along with mangel seeds and pumpkin seeds for them. i plan on growin the cayenne peppers, then drying them and grinding my own down for cooking use and for mixing in the food for the birds too. I had major problems with my hens trying to eat every last one of my cherry tomatoes...they would go for the bigger tomatoes as well, but were death on the wee ones. Kind of decided that a part of my garden would be dedicated to growing food for them and am trying to plan out exactly what I'll be growing for them.

I want to let my layers free range some this summer. I can just imagine what they are going to do to my garden! The garden will be in fairly close proximity to their pen, so that is probably the first place they will head. I'll have to find a way to fence them out, then it will be nice to give them the produce that I don't want to keep for human consumption.
