Hopefully the marans are still going and wake up soon! At least the cochin eggs are half marans, not sure what they will look like, but we will see!

ETA: I lied, the eggs are from our blue chicken with the peacomb apparenttly because both babies are splash with a peacomb! At least I can get my baby fix! these are my first of the spring! I guess that by them being splash that my Blue Copper rooster is the daddy!

Sorry I am so late. I lost this thread somehow & had to go searching to find out where I was........LOL Anyway...........I hatched out 17 out of 20 Delawares. I didn't candle 'til everybody was out & the last 3 Delli eggs were clear. All of the EEs hatched out big & strong. My one & only Blue (Blue Copper) & 11 Black Coppers. Looking over my egg shells after everything was over I am a little confused. I threw an OE in there for fun & it hatched & I don't have a clue..........LOL I only show 4 big blue shells (EEs), but I have 5 chipmunk marked chicks so I am assuming that OE is one of them, but who??????????? LOL. All the Marans are mine. The EEs will go to my cousin who wants colored eggs & 10 of the Dellies were a special order. They others are up for grabs....LOL I will check with the 4H kids & the Vet down the street from me that has nice chicken pens that are empty. I am totally delighted
I hatched out 25 for my chicken friend Carrie (Harmony Oaks), 2 White Marans, a bunch of Dark Brahmas & I don't know what else. Funny thing I set all these eggs exactly the same & at the same time & all of Carries shelf was way delayed in hatching. I was really getting nervous. Mine were hatching out all over & zilch from her shelf. Then I went to sleep at midnight & when I got up at 5 her first one was out & slowly the others started pipping.
Carrie drve down & we spent yesterday trying to wing (feather) sex all of them & banded them accordingly. I sooooooooooooooo hope we suck at this because we came up with waaaaay too many cockerels if we are right.....LOL What fun.!!!!!
Let me figure out this picture uploading again, again, again & I will post pictures.

Late to express my thanks to flgarden for the great pics. Thank you!

A question based on some of the hen pictures. The standard says "moderately tight and smooth textured" for the plumage.
My interpretation would be that means less fluffy. Maybe it was just the angle of the pictures or the wind or something, but a lot of those hens, seemed pretty "fluffy" especially along the back. It was more visible on the blues and some of the black coppers.

What is correct? To me fluffy does not coincide with tight and smooth textured. I'm not talking about below the wingline. I love the fluffy look too, but is it really Marans?

S&G: great job on the pic upload. Love the headshot of the blue in the 'bator.

Mel,
I soooooooooooo know what you mean when I first started reading these threads I was like that too & still am somewhat but someone was nice enough to lish a whole bunch of the acranims for me. If I could find the post I would refer you to it. I have learned as I go along & just ask a chicken lovin' friend if I don't know. I thought SQ meant square until I asked & it's Show Quality.....LOL

Mel, a side sprig is when there is a....sprig....that comes out to the side of the comb. HA! Single comb, base of blade should be smooth/flat. If there are any little bumps or sprigs growing out sideways, it's a side sprig. Penedesenca were supposedly used in some lines years ago, and side sprigs is a sure indication of that. Not a big deal, just don't use a specimen with them as you don't want that to carry forward in your flock.
