a lot of us are still learning, just different levels of the learning curve. I'm pretty new at this as well and *most* the folks here are really helpful and quite knowledgable!! I hear ya on spending hard earned $$ on chicken eggs and its always a risk with genetics. Lots of great visuals here to learn from and you can always PM one of the *well educated chicken gurus* (privately) if you feel a bit awkward talking/asking publicly!

Don't feel bad I spent $40 on 11 birchen eggs and hatched out only 1 !! It turned out to be a fertility issue with the hens just starting to lay again after the colder weather etc.
It happens to everyone now and again but I do think that your seller is being misleading if thier 'Salmons' are truly barred like the ones in that photo-not your fault, next time you will know.

So are they mutts or gold birchens of some kind? If determined worthy of breeding (they are only 5 months right now), do you only breed them to blues/splash or to black copper? The spangled one is definitely the *plate* not *mate* type from earlier comments so he will probably meet the freezer gang at 6 months or so. But his bros, the dark and lighter birchens?, what to do with them? Thanks!

Thank you...this is fantastic info...the coding that goes with genetics doesn't just roll off the tip of my tongue...I usually have to go look it up. I go mostly by logic and from past experience with breeding. I appreciate the way you explain things!

one appears more silvery the other shows more gold. It stopped raining for a bit, maybe I will try and get photos but have a bunch of dogs to bathe for upcoming national specialty so no guarantees on photos

Ok, had to pull my pony up a bit on the comment that the Ig gene blue inhibiting black? (I am a total green horn on chicken color genetics. No, make that clueless!!)....in dogs, the blue is a dilute gene affecting the expression of black. So you are saying that the blue inhibits, not dilutes, the black? (please forgive my ignorance!)

Morning to you Seabreeze and Flgardengirl! Its a gray hazy morning here, but in good spirits. Just got home from getting my taxes done and getting a decent refund...so I'm happy about that. Thinking I'm gonna put part of it towards my birds..We'll see what I end up with hehe

Any hatches for you two recently or coming up? I love hearing what people have going on. The other day I hatched out my first 7 dorkings..and they gorgeousness...they are Dark Brown, Dun and Fawn colors...a couple of each. I also got a decent hatch on some shipped black copper eggs. That tip of leaving them sitting in the hatching tray for a few days before moving them to the turners has dramatically changed my hatching rate on eggs.

Flgardengirl, I was gonna ask if they are replacing your eggs for you since it was a fertility issue? I sure hope so!!

Good luck with the show Seabreeze, that's gotta be exciting
