Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Thanks for the complitments on my blue copper boy, I originally only kept him because he has been one of the best feather shanked offspring produced out of clean legged boy Bill. I hope he continues to show me lots to like instead of going the other way. I HAVE TOO MANY ROOSTERS!!!!

Enggass~ Toby is a cockerel. Too bad about his toe, I am really liking the color of his blue and his lacing. (see Math Ace I can't always sex them accurately

Syble~ The shorter outside toe happens from time to time, it does have to do with the feather shanked gene.....I have seen it more this year in my hatches since January than I ever have and they are coming from the pure Davis pen. Here's the kicker....it didn't happen until I started breeding the Black Copper girls that were shipped in to me from Florida last year.....they are WAY more heavily feathered than any of my original birds or stock that I started breeding with when I started out. My original birds do not have the heavily feathered shanks or outer toes and I never ended up with short toed chicks until now and I know they are coming from the Black Copper girls that I have. I removed one gal from the breeding pen yesterday when I was finally able to catch her because I know 2 chicks that I hatched in the last couple months had short toes and they came from her egg. I know it is not my rooster because he does not throw short toed chicks....however I know that he will throw a clean legged chick. Seems like it is one thing or another huh?

Math Ace~ I love the bucket nest boxes....do you just have those sitting around outside where they freerange so they don't have to go back into the coop? I was wondering if I should set some nest boxes up outside for them to snoop around in, but I usually just leave the coop door open so they can come and go.

Pink ~ Love the Bill boy! He looks a lot like daddy, with better copper coming in. I can see it!

Mel ~ Love the splashes and the blue pullet! Did you check the bottom of the roo's foot for Bumblefoot? Sure hope that's not what is making him limp.

This is the Great Pacific Northwest. We don't get "Bumblefoot" out here. That is a southern malady...

Better think again. Anywhere they can step on a staub and injure the foot, they can get bumble.

Mel~ Debbi is right....bumblefoot can happen anywhere. I had a Welsummer rooster that got bumblefoot almost 4 years ago. I was able to treat him and keep all others safe. As soon as he was healed he found a new home in a soup pot...man was that a nasty thing to deal with but I did it. Very glad I have not had to deal with it since then.
