Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Wynette, I think it would cost less than feeding a flock and babies till their old enough to keep/cull. And I agree with Snowbird that it would be expensive. Sherman has got to be 8 pounds now. He is a hunk of a rooster!

Can't remember the exact weight but believe it is 7-8 pounds for the single shipper. From where I live everything has to go to Detroit Metro for shipments. It is much cheaper and less of a chance if you can find someone that is honest and will ship good bred fowl.

Sabella, I will give you some advice on breeding this BC female and get some Blue Copper young . You would want to use a splash male out of the Blue Copper for best results. I am going by what I know and not from any of the formulas out. Your male has some Mahogany on his back and should only be bred to a splash female to get the best results.

I will have splashes in the future. I have a Blue Copper female so I expect some splashes out of her and Sherman. If I don't sell the problem pullet I will try to get a splash cockerel worth keeping from Sherman.

My current flock is Sherman, one Blue copper female and two BCM females. They're my first chickens. I recently added three EE girls, but that isn't relevant to this thread.

I do have room for some of your stock here in Oregon..Just give me notice and I will clean out a spot!!! You said they are Wade Jeanne... Where did you get your original stock (if you don't mind my asking). I do have that Presley influence that is a bugger... I would love to get rid of the skittles with a wide load of a dark rooster...

Jan, It will be a while before I know for sure what I have made this year. I will cull the oldest three hundred this weekend and looking mostly for cull males. They are 6-7 weeks old. I have a lot more that I had planned, and I have two more incubators yet to hatch. All the culls I do not put in the freezer will go to a local auction for the ethnic groups.

That was my other question... what in the world do you do with all the culls... Sheesh.. that is a lot of birds.

Well I have seen the pictures you posted of the coops....

Now lets see the FREEZER

It must be a bigun!!!

I am sorry to be redundant but what stock did you start with... I know they are clearly yours at this point but what was the jumping off point... I still have the baby colors stuck in my head... and how different yours look from mine.
