Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Hey Lynette! How is life treating you and your birdies? Is Sassy getting bigger? I was thinking about her the other day and thinking how funny it must be watching her try to be a turkey

Those are some nice looking birchens you have growing up. I am drooling @ your lavender silver sussex. I NEED one of those too LOL! Very cool.
Sassy is just fine. Its funny she hasnt gotten fowl pox and the others did but she doesn't hang out with those silly chickens, she's a turkey LOL. Yesterday evening dh took his cell phone outside and was sitting in the lawn chair playing these 'turkey calls' that he downloaded on his phone and OMG both the turkey hens started acting all perverted and strutting around with thier feathers ruffled and squatted down like they wanted to be mated! I was totally lmao and Sassy was looking at them like what's wrong with you freaks?

I'm gonna have to get you some better pics...i so owe you them after how long. Its been a hard last month and a half with my back giving me fits for most of it. I have a lavender silver pullet too...but she is terrifyingly shy...she is just so stinking sweet that all the others just walk all over her. But she is a loooooker!

I'll have to see if the weather isn't too bad tomorrow if I can get her and her man caught up so I can get better pics. I still need to see about getting my hands on a pair of silver sussex if possible since it is obvious that the lavenders need that blood infused into the line to improve feather condition. That's the only part I don't like about lavender...is the tendency for frizzy-ness.

I have quite a few birchens growing out....I should just catch them all up and make another pass through, culling them down more for winter. Just off the top of my head I have right around 35 to 40 probably. They are the color variety I'm giving the most time to grow out so that I can see how they do.

That's hilarious that your dh was playing turkey calls and I love Sassy's response. Smart girl!

Wow that's a lot of birchens! I only have the 3. So... do you have any splash birchens? I was wondering the other day what one would look like. Sassy is so light blue and has some blue leakage that she almost looks splash but she is definitely light blue not white on most her feathers. I was wondering if the silver hackles or saddles shows up very well on the true splash birchens. I don't think I've ever seen one.

I would love to see your lav silver sussex pullet whenever you can get the time to catch her. Its funny how some of the shy ones turn out to be super friendly and sweet once they get to point of lay. I have two olive eggs that wanted nothing to do with me until about a week ago then they are all lovey dovey all of a sudden and yep there is new olive eggs in the nest box on the porch lol.

I was at the grocery store earlier today and pumpkins are 3.98 each. I need to go to the farmer's market and see if I can get some cheaper I wanna get some for all the chooks -I think I will need several lol.

ABSOLUTELY!!!! Get flexible netting from a chicken supplier (I got mine from Meyer Hatchery) and cover the top! Also, raccoons will climb up & over your fence and do as much damage as any coyote. I had one eat all my Royal Palm turkeys last year!

Evening!

Nope, no more babies. I turned the 'bator off and tossed 'em. Barnies - 4, Marans - 0. Had 2 more pips in the Barnies, but both pipped and died, the last baby still has the bump for not absorbing...it's quite big, not sure of her, but she seems to be doing fine. She is pretty spunky. The other female has splayed leg, so I am fixing her up right now. Something isn't working just right......day 24 and a few issues.

*edited to add* I did open them before tossing....a couple broke the inner membrane but stopped and the others didn't pip internally...fully developed that I could see.

I have some more Barnie eggs and a few pullet eggs from my Wy's that I am saving to put in and now the Marans are being silly and stingy. If it ain't one coop....it's another.

Of coure...both little rooster babies are doing just fine, too fine matter of fact. I don't think they sleep. Rascals! They are trouble already I see.
