I know...I really wanted to go...and I had forgotten the Hutchinson show was this weekend too. Yarg! Hopefully next year things will indeed be better.

I love how you can make all the plans you want but they never seem to go quite as planned. My neighbor decides of all the days to harvest this side of his field...he always starts with the other side...anyways, its got my birds all in an uproar and am waiting til they calm down some to do some sorting and moving. I was sittin on the back porch however playing with the kitties waitin for him to move his equipment further away before letting birds out for the morning and doin chores and looked down into the barn and saw something pretty funny. I have a real set of stairs that go up to the haymount...they are set on counter weights so the entire stair case will retract and sit flush against ceiling, between the joists to the haymount....well I've been keeping them down so the kitties can go up and hone their mousing skills. I just saw one of my splash girls march up there like she owned it. I'm gonna have to go hunting for a nest to see if she's hiding some up there. Silly turd!

I tell ya with all the stupid carnation combs that popped up on me this year I didn't even notice if the ones with carnation had the heaviest feathered legs. Interesting....if the stupid comb thing happens again in these eggs I have in the 'bator I will make note to pay attention to the shank feathering.

Debbi...did you notice if they also had very heavy toe feathering or if they had stubs in between the toes?

Did you misread my post maybe? I didn't say shank feathering, I said feather shafting.

I have not noticed a correlation between the shank feathers and the carnations. JR has nice feathering, but would not call it heavy. Muttly has sparse feathering and the WORST carnation I have seen yet!

The hen has NO shank feathering, neither does the pullet. So I would conclude that there is no correlation between the two. JMO

ETA: None of the birds have toe stubs, JR has proper outside toe feathers, the rest have nothing on their feet. I have yet to have anyone here with middle toe feathering.

Look back at my post, I added another comment.

Oh Anna, et tu??

Nice blue girl there. Why is it they find the wonkiest places to lay those eggs??

Haha that's funny. They sure pick the strangest places to lay eggs. I have an old homemade ladder that used to go to a wooden playground. I was using it to climb up and put roofing on the big coop. Afterwards dh had it laying flat on the ground behind the coop runs. One day I walked back there and there were like 20 eggs inbetween the ladder steps/rungs lol.

All the beauty berry bushes are ripe full of the prettiest pink berries. THese are okay for human consumption and people make jelly from them so I have always fed them to the chickens. This year my older girls noticed before me that these berries were ripe and started putting up a fuss trying to get the ones behind their run on the other side of the fence. So now when I go out there I have to spend alot of time giving them their berry treats lol. The turkeys freerange and go back there and they are tall enough just to reach up there and eat them in front of the chickens and it drives them crazy LOL.

I was out by the run yesterday, and heard a bunch of flapping of wings in the garden. I still have about 4 cherry tomato plants there with fruit on them. With all that flapping, I was thinking a couple of the roos were getting into it, so I peeked over there and watched. Nope, it was Pip, trying to leap up and get the tomatoes at the top of the vines!

He didn't seem to be very successful, so I went in there and picked him some. Of course when I went in there, he had to growl at me, but when I threw him some maters, he changed his tune. Silly bird...
