Sophie would of been a better name for her, but I got her already named - GLADYS. I never understood that because this girl is never GLAD about anything! LOL

Maybe you were hoping the name would help her out!

Yesterday we were talking about the shape of the head and I said that I would dig up some photos and post them. Here are some of my birds that had or have the head shape I love.

Please disregard and look past the blossoming carnation comb on this BC pullet, she had a great shape to her head.

This is one of the gals from Florida that I still have, she is now 1.5 years old, I think she was just 6 mos. in this photo. She was also Don and Geebs' favorite pullet out of that bunch.

This was Slate, a blue copper hen that did not show any copper and had not so neat crisp lacing....I kept her because I loved her body and her head. Unfortunately, I could not darken her offsprings egg color, she had a very light milky chocolate egg, barely eeking in to meet a #4 on the color chart.

One of my original Black Copper gals. I miss her. She had a lovely head.

Ooooo.....can't forget a photo of Phat Sassy....she had a beautiful head, too bad her egg color stunk, I loved her.

Lil' Bill posing for us yesterday out playing in the sun. I love the shape of his head, this bird reminds me sooo much of Bill, Sr., except he has feathered shanks and is a little lighter blue.

and just because the sun really washed out his colors in the above photo of him....I thought I would post a photo that shows his copper accurately. This is also in the full sun, just without glare. I love this copper color....this is the color of copper I want on all of my Copper Marans.

Bill Sr., my all time, all time favorite-est rooster EVER! I love everything about this rooster..including his clean shanks. He used to have a beautiful 5 point comb too until he live with the mean girls for a spell.

Here's a better shot of the shape of Bill's head.

The Birchen Male....disregard and look past the sprig on the blade of his comb and look at the shape of the head.

Eta: Sorry the photos are so big. WoW! Didn't know they would load that huge.

man...I wish I could be working on breeding pens today. Instead I am going to be moving birds because it snowed yesterday. Some of my younger birds do not look to happy right now with the white stuff. I don't know how far I'll get, but don't really have a choice.

what all are ya hatchin out?

Marans so far.... it is just a test, big test but a test. I candled a couple yesterday and didn't see anything... but it is early or may not be fertile IDK. They looked fertile in the skillet

The new birds will be Lav AM and Wheaten AM the lavs are laying so I will be hatching anything that I can from them. Mostly splits I think, 4 Black Am, 1 Split and 1 Lav with 2 Lav Roos. May sell the lav splits and just keep the lavs. I have 2 lav splits growing up (from the birds I am getting) and 3 lavs. So far no signs of a roo in the bunch go figure (10-13 weeks)

We will be hatching for the New Year- hoping to get the eggs to hatch Jan 1st or 2nd. We will start collecting today and plan to set on Dec 12th(ours like to hatch a day early) what ever we collect till then. We have 2 different pens of Welsummers and 3 different pens of Blue Andalusians and 1 pen of Lt Brown Bantam Leghorns and 1 pen of Wheaten Ameraucana-not sure if they will lay anything their pen looks to have had a pillow fight on going for the last couple of days. DH just agreed to build us a bigger incubator using a small refrig- have to go pick it up later today so he can get it together for the 12th

No Marans this time as the older girls aren't older enough to lay.

Morning all, can anyone who may have them post pictures of their carnation combs young, JV, or adult please? Would like some visual reference to go from.

Also our songs starting a blog for his hatching, growing out and photo documenting the PenneMarans. We have new wing bands ordered for him, have begun selling off the call duck breeders already too. So he will have raised grow out pens for the hatchlings. He will keep records of where the eggs come from, photo record of the egg shell color and grow out records.

Anyone who has eggs available for this project let us know. He has a dickey cabinet bator arriving Monday and is anxious to fill it up and start this project.
