Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Maybe he was DQ for color, and also had a side sprig.
The tags are sometimes hard to read.

And, some people have no idea what they have, so they learn by going to shows.
Not everyone has a SOP in their hands.....

I don't have one either, but I know it's a DQ. It's (side sprig) a DQ in ALL breeds, so it should be on the top of the easy list for DQing.

That's because we care about these things.
We are working to better the breed.
Then there are others.........

I don't know I'm thinking wheaten splash because he doesn't look like my copper splashes. Funny how it doesn't say on the tag. Haha this is the show that you just loved those tags that say Maran instead of Marans LOL!

I'd say it's a Wheaten just by looking at the wing triangle. You just had to bring up those cage cards, didn't you??

I'm thinking since it was the first show trying to get Marans approved that everyone just brought a variety of Marans to make a good representation of all the different kinds out there. Maybe just to show what colors are out there but didn't neccessarily expect to win...just a guess. I dunno lol.

The only marans club I saw there was Marans Chicken Club USA. Not sure they are a really small outfit as far as Marans clubs go. I don't know what all birds belonged to who but there is a list of the winners somewhere. I'm sure lots of non-members brought birds as well.

Very true, all the more reason for the judges to be vigilant and constant in the DQs. New people will see that "pretty" bird and want eggs or chicks from it. Then go on to breed those birds with funky combs without realizing; afterall, it IS a "show bird", right?? So they sell "show quality" chicks themselves, and on and on it goes. That's why we are in the mess we are in now with the carnation combs...just saying.

Oh and LOL! I know you did girl, but I just wanted to know if my eyes were playing tricks on me or if everyone else could see it too.

I'm glad to see the other tags that recognised the sprigs. There couldn't have only been 1 judge judging this entire huge show, so I could see how things might be missed, stuff happens, right?

Anyway....that bird that is labeled a Splash Marans......wow, first one I have ever seen that looked like that but then again I only work with the BC, Bl- Cpr and now the Birchen so I have basically lead a sheltered Marans life and not really versed myself with other varieties.

Thanks for the kind words on my #92....I've been asked to send her and her sisters packing to several places.

This was in Newnan GA. It is actually quite a large show (all kinds of breeds) but the first for getting the BCM approved so last year. The most Marans in one place that I'd seen since to that date. They had thier own Marans tent lol. Both the good and the bad. There were some really nice ones there as well, especially big beautiful BCM hens

Man oh man, I would have loved to take some of those girls home with me.

I should get you some more pics of that blue copper girl and her sister that is the darkest blue marans I've ever had, but she is starting to get coppering in her neck...the color contrast is just striking! I think I'll put her with my splash boy Big Boy to bring the blue saturation down just a step to regain the lacing on the feathers.
