Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Just wanted to give everyone a heads up that my first set of eggs when into the VINO-BATOR tonight! It took me a while because I was playing with the temp, humdity, vents, etc under different scenarios and logging it down. My wife kind thinks i am....shall we say, "UP tight" about certain things.

Anyways, wish us luck, keep your fingers crossed and I'll be updating you all. Looking forward to candling in 8 days.

BCM&BLCM in front, EE'rs in the back.

BTW, also snuck 6 Cuckoo's under my Broody Cochin

yeah...that line in particular runs pretty small compared to any others I've seen or dealt with. Hey...did I tell you Kim and I both got ourselves on that list for chicks in the spring? I haven't been online at the same time as you for a while, but I have a feeling I may not have.

I'm sittin on the edge of my chickie chick seat!!!!!!!

SWEET! I am going to use my "Not Jamaica" funds for the little critters. It's one of those big 5 gal. water jugs that you would have on a water cooler in your house.....all of our spare change goes into it.....DH is contributing and he doesn't even know it.

(A long story for another time and thread as to why it is called the "Not Jamaica" fund.

haha thats awesome! i have a smaller version of that too. its shocking how fast it adds up!

Guess what! I found my usb adaptor thingy...I'll have to see if I can get some pics. I work all day today, so by the time I get home it'll be dark...but I'll see what I can do. Some of my girls are looking soo good too! I'm just still kind of stuck on the carnation info you shared yesterday Kim...its reminding me of some of the other things that my dad has worked with and successfully either eliminated in his birds or significantly reduced and culls any carriers and ones that show the problems with pretty good success. Maybe its my own morbid curiosity that makes me want to make it a research project to see what I can find.

I can't wait to see more photos!!!! Glad you found the adapter!

That stuff still has my head spinning Vicki. Debbi and I exchanged quite a few emails disecting it and I don't think that either one of us came up with anything conclusive.......then Village comes up with something like polygenic and dominant.

I can't take it anymore!

I think that you are right about being able to atleast significantly reduce it, but in the back of my pea brain, I still think that we will not be able to eliminate it completely and with Village's comment now pretty much confirms my fears of not being able to eliminate it. It seems daunting and when a person really sits down and thinks about all the crosses and single mating that would need to be done..it's scary.

yeah it is scary. Its all I thought about at work yesterday and had a hard time falling asleep last night and even was up early thinking about it. Probably will think about it again at work when I leave here in a few minutes. I don't believe it will be completely eliminated....that's right, but no matter how long or hard it might be to reduce it or to see if there can be headway made, I'm game. I guess to me, it seems like all of a sudden this issue is rampant and even if I can't eliminate it, I want to see what I might be able to do to make sure I know how to handle it and do what I can to have clean birds. It seems more than not recently its just person after person with the problem. Its so sad! Do you think you might be able to link me to the thread over on that forum via email or PM?
