Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

no worries Kim. That's the part that is weird about how he went thru his molt and how he is losing the color on his chest. He's always just had all red feathers and then either they molted out, or turned black as he's gotten older. the pic isn't the best I know, but its not really shafting...he's got a couple of feathers that from time to time when I'd look at him I wondered if it was, but have kept an eye on them and the shafting has gone away just like the rest of the feather. Its kind of like how the white on the birds eventually turns black in some. I don't know what to think really, just think its interesting and not like shafting I've seen on any of the photos I've seen of the Marans that have it. I'm really curious to see how he progresses and if more of that color will fade. Just in the last month, he has lost even more color and in the last month is when he was coming out of his molt. Regardless, its going to be really interesting to see what he produces!

IMHO, I believe he is worth test mating.

yeah...he is definitely going to be put into single pairings with a few of the ladies around here. That over coloring on his chest really has been about the only thing I didn't like about him...his tail sets a bit high, but has changed as he grown and widened out and such, so that's something I'm comfortable pairing with select girls. Really...everything else I like... I kind of go with the process in culling of taking out any birds when they are younger that have non negotiables...like comb defects, feathers on middle toes, squirrel tails and the like, and as I keep working on culling as birds are growing I continue to cull as things pop up, but by the time birds get a bit older and they have still made it here, then I start looking at what I can live with. What I can pair against another bird that might create more balanced offspring, like with the too short/too long backs, tail sets etc. If a bird has three things I don't like...beyond the culling for DQs and faults, as much as I like them...they go. The only time I will keep one is if I've had a hard year and lost another bird etc that would have been what I would pick. I will work with what I have and see if I can get something by pairing with the right girls/boys depending on the circumstance. That three number helps me set a limit and is like my built in check and balance that I'm not letting something slip through that shouldn't just because I like the personality of the bird or etc. So, having said all that, now that Gigantor's breast coloring has changed so dramatically in the last three months or so, I've really come to not find much about him I don't like...mostly just tail angle and that is workable.

Interesting.....can you please explain a little more as to why you think they are linked?

It's just what I am seeing here in my birds. Carnationed combed birds all also have feather shafting. Sprig bird (Blue Butt blue copper) does not have shafting. Normal combed birds, no feather shafting.

All info I am spouting is from what I see here. I don't have the genetic background or anything else to go by.

No problem and thanks for more.....I was just curious and now I see why you have linked them. Would be interesting to take one of your males that has the shafting and the comb and cross him to a normal bird and see what how the offspring mature.

so far its 22 up here this morning, when I went to bed last night it was about 17 out. I don't know how warm its supposed to get, but its at least not windy like it has been for quite a few days...so the birds are liking that!

At this point in time, I still don't know for sure if I even have a "normal" bird! I am treating all hens/pullets here as carriers. If I bred Muttley to a "normal" looking girl, I know I would get more Funky. Forgedaboutit!

Did you read this entire thread? This is a very interesting thread even though it does not pertain directly to what we have going on, but gives a great deal of infomation on combs and types and how they behave. I truly believe they are sprigs that we are dealing with that have variations and perhaps maybe another fault or issue as well. The first bad comb that I had pop up was "ingrown" or inverted as Debbi is describing...but it did come out fully when he reached maturation leaving the comb looking normal with the exception of the 2 lovely sprigs out either side. The others that have expressed in the birds I have hatched out have not been ingrown or inverted, just have the sprigs or signs of sprigs. Oh and I was wrong on my count of the birds that I have hatched with the problem....I have hatched out 5 Marans with this particular issue.....2 of them not being of my lines or from my birds. The other the Delaware hen I don't believe counts.

Ever thought about how hard it would be to breed out the combs on some other breeds of chickens?

Can you imagine trying to breed this comb out of it's breed? This is a rosecomb. (borrowed from The Coop from the same link as above)

I really actually like the chicken in the first pic. He is really wild! He looks like an evil witch doctor or something. He needs to be in a movie LOL!

Geez sorry to hear about all the cold temps you guys are experiencing. I thought I was freezing this morning when I went out to feed the chooks and it was 31. I guess I have backslid into my warm blooded climate ways LOL. My dd is visiting with her friends and went to see thier parents in N. Iowa. She called me and said it was 20F there about an hour ago. She's not used to the cold anymore either.

31?? You warm-blooded sissy!

I can take the cold, as long as the wind isn't blowing! Actually, it's pretty refreshing, and I got my exercize this morning when I had to haul water from the house! Dang hydrant was frozen again.

With all this warm weather we've had, I forgot all about fixing it.

Yeah...I'm pretty sick of the cold already, but will take this any day over a worse winter...that's for sure. Even just having the sun shining helps

Doh! hope it warms up a bit more for you so you can get that hydrant fixed and don't have to worry about it anymore. I was just gettin ready to go take a couple of pics...or attempt to. I wish I could make the birdies behave...but they have a mind of their own..that's for sure!

Yep I am a sissy. Can't believe I ever lived where it was cold and liked it !! I never did like the wind though. I can take some cold as long as it isn't some horried ice wind blasting in my face OR if I'm out working and get my hands wet grrrr then cold on top of it. I accidently cut my pinky finger half off some years ago and they re-attached it and it really hurts bad and turns blue when it gets too cold. Its kinda like I have some Raynaud's Syndrome in that finger.
Dh did the same thing to his thumb with the table saw the first year we moved here lol. His does the same thing too.

Going to get more coffee now all this talk of cold...DH got me a little red keurig coffee maker for xmas. Dd and I are the only ones that drink coffee so it kinda makes sense. I have hardly used it though. It seems like such a waste with those little throw away cups. I think I will get the reusable filter for it and just use it that way. I usually just make instant LOL. NOT telling dh that!

I will try to get some pics later when it warms up a bit. All the roos are wild this morning! Blue Butt and I already had one go 'round with the broom! He may just meet his maker today, I've about had it with him!
