I use baskets from the Dollar Store with hardware cloth over the top. Could probably stack them, but I couldn't see the babies underneath if I did.

these work well for me...they are the same depth as the tray and the whole cover goes over the top and they are snug as a bug until they hatch and I can get them tagged

I remember you telling about them! so that is what they look like. Why did you say a strawberry basket was too tall?

See above... never mind!

Awesome!! And SO easy!!

Thanks for taking the time to get a pic for us!!

SO wanted to use the strawberry flats as little jails bc the little buggers weren't staying where they should!
This is better -that's a LIT of strawberries and I really dislike strawberries!!

the sportsman tray is only a couple inches deep...so unless i cut them down, they are too tall...especially since the trays above tilting back and forth would make them too tall for it to do its job right as well. The other thing I like about these is that they don't have a bottom I have to clean...just the tray itself and that's a breeze. The other thing is that I can just dip these to clean and sanitize them in a few seconds.

haha I have a stash of the baskets...I do tons of gardening and people are always giving me things they think I can't live without. At least I have a use for them when I DO use them as jails when i'm emptying out the hatching tray. The baskets are the perfect height to keep the buggers IN where they belong with their egg shell where all my info is... I'll have to get pics of the cardboard trays I'm using too for 'holding cells' as well...I think I'm gonna be all set for the test mating for sure!

That thermostat you showed me.... can't find it local.... a city this size and she tells me "that is too sophisticated for a pet store" WTH?

Can you select a temp? or do you have to use a thermometer and just dial it till you get it right? I just can't find a close up picture to really SEE what it looks like.

I found one for seedlings that you can dial the temp and it has a 6ft probe about the same price.

oh...I should have been more clear. The hatching tray I have comes with a metal cover for the whole tray...these little plastic trays go in, filled with eggs and then, put the original metal mesh lid over the top. They don't move about since they are snug up against the lid and when I go to empty the tray of chicks. I lift the lid, pull a couple and put the lid back down to keep the little turds from jumping....it goes really quickly this way and stays very accurate

you probably could, but I don't know if the dishwasher gets too hot for the plastic. I just fill up a bowl with a bit of dishwashing liquid and water...swish them around, leave them for a minute..then rinse. If I know they are clean and I've had them in my storage container for them I will make up a quick mix of sanitizer and dip them quick...let them dry and I'm good to go.
