Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Ok.. you guys are killin' me. The chicks are at 10 days old today so it sounds like I have missed my window on many of the indications. I should have asked these questions sooner! Well live and learn! I did notice a few with primaries sooner (because they looked so funny) and a couple with tailfeathers within days. Gonna have to keep a notebook next to the brooder to take notes daily. It never ceases to amaze me how fast they change!

Here are pics of the one with copper wings (hard to do solo). I thought I was going crazy because the first photos I took didn't seem obvious. But when I went back downstairs to check again, he/she is definitely showing color where others aren't. I kept the pics a bit large hoping it would be more obvious to you too. Here you go... 'xplain Lucy, 'xplain!

Well...its been an interesting day. I got home later than usual...after running around lincoln trying to find an actual Wells fargo that was open...third times the charm I guess...I have no idea why some were closed

I got to enjoy a bit of time outside...some good parts, some not so good. The good parts was time playing with birdies...I got some photos I'll have to load in just a bit. Still need to get many more bird photos of ones you haven't seen yet, but the bad part.... My two gorgeous SLW cockerels were battling it out to the death...I'm talking wings drooping, covered in blood, out of breath battling. I got them separated and got everyone else shut in for the night and then I started hearing an all too familiar sound. An owl...we've been hearing one off and on for the last couple of weeks and I finally saw him tonight. He was down in the old cemetary next to us and a good distance away, but I could pick out his silouette against the sunset... I thought...hey, luckily I've got my camera with me, I'll go get a shot of him if i can. I got about half way there and he took off.... bottom line...He's huge! I'd guess at least a 3 1/2 - 4 foot wingspan if not more. So, that's something else I'm gonna have to watch pretty carefully.

Here's that little BCM bantam girl i've been nursing back to health. She's really been enjoying her daily visits with her friends...but she doesn't like that she is in a confinement pen. Its for her own good tho...don't want those boys re-injuring her before she's totally healed. Its hard to get a decent shot when trying to take a photo while holding her too...but she's such a little slip of a thing. Its hard to believe that her comb is so red now, especially since it was almost completely black when I found her!

Just like this shot...its some of the birdies makin their way back to the barn to settle in for the night. This is finally a shot that shows how big Gigantor really is....that splash boy is pretty dang big too...but looks puny in this.

They look really pretty in that sunset lighting. Your little girl looks so sweet. I'm glad she is recovering. Your splash boy does look big if you compare him to the girls next to him and Gigantor looks even bigger. What a porker LOL!

Nice looking group you have there. It looks like you've had Marans for awhile. How are you liking them? What are your thoughts about them? Glad to see you here.

Hi!

I only had Marans for 3 years and started with Cuckoos and now I just love them all! I am very pleased to see the French Black Copper Marans accepted by APA and Wheatens right behind them! Very great dual purpose breed and the eggs are to die for! An addictive breed that's for sure. We need to work together and spread the knowledge on breeding these birds to their potential because they are there just need stern breeders! I tend to stick in the quail forum forgetting we have great folks all over. I will stop by and say hi more often

thanks Lenette! I love these guys! They are just a teensy tiny part of my birds, but they might or might not be some of my favorites

I'm just happy I finally got a pic that shows how big these boys are. Big Boy (the splash) looks pretty pathetic with his molty tail, but I'm hoping he's coming out of it now
