Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Ok now that if figured out the eggs did not come from the chicks..... Speckled eggs are normal. The third girl if she is raising babies.... probably no eggs. How old are the chicks?

They didn't say how old. Appears to be probably about 7-9 weeks old. Feathered out. It is smaller than my buff orp chicks that are 10 weeks but larger than my lavender orps that are 5 1/2 weeks old. My Buff orp hen started laying again when her chicks were 9 weeks old. Hopefully today I can watch and see who lays what. Thanks for the information.

Good morning all! It's been awhile since I've been around. I have cuckoo marans. I started with them when cuckoos were all you could get and were still rare. I still love them, but I think I am going to have to get some blues.

I really like blue chickens. Keep me in mind if you have any. From a former dial upper, I feel your computer pains, lol. I live about 3 miles from where the ATT tower ends and they WOULD DO NOTHING to help me, so I don't have ATT any longer. Verizon has a hot spot that works wonderfully for me. I am in a rural area and they let me check it out first. I love it! We can use up to 5 computers, gaming devices, etc at the same time and my favorite part is that it is portable. It's a little bigger than a gift card and I stick it in my pocket and take it with me. It probably costs more than broad band, but less than satelitte. My total cost is about $62/month. My kids have to use the computer so much with school that dial up was not an option. If you try it out, let me know how you like it.

My chicks are 16 days old and I wonder if any gender guessing pros would like to give it a go. I have a lot of pics so instead of posting all the pics here I have them online. Just click this link to go to the page... http://www.christiesnails.com/chix/marans/ It should open up in a new window so you don't lose your spot here.

Thank you!

Hi Gina!

What's a hot spot?? I am in a dead zone here, and neither of the phone companies in this area will cooperate! We don't even have cable TV out here yet, and by the time it finally gets here it will be obsolete! My only options are dial-up or satellite, which from what I hear doesn't work too well here due to the hills and trees?? Not to mention it costs like $65/mon. which is waaaaay out of my budget. We have DSL all around me, about 9 miles out from me on all sides, but I am in a black hole it seems, not much population out here for them to bother with us.

Congrats on the eggs! I have noticed today, when I finally got FOUR eggs
roll.png
, from 8 hens, that the ones who free range also have the darkest shell color. They also have a much deeper yolk color, which was no surprise, but shell color?? Could it just be coincedence? The girls that stay in the run (their choice, I offer them out every day) are second year layers, the out girls are pullets yet. Just wondered if anyone else sees this?

Yep....freeranging makes a HUGE difference in the shell color and the yolk color.

Thanks Kim! I wondered, because the girls that stay in the run (I guess because of Clyde?), had darker eggs last year when they were free ranging. This year, they are almost a full shade lighter! Until all these boys are gone, I can't leave the run gate open, so will have to get used to their lighter eggs. The two laying in the mail box, are nicely colored! You should see two pullets sitting in a medium sized Priority box, both laying eggs!

They used to take turns, now I guess they are saving time? I'll have to put our another box, but if it's anything like inside the coop, they all lay in the same box anyway!

Debbie, I don't know much about computers. All I can say is they told me it was a data box, and that's supposed to make it work better in remote areas. It does cost me $62/month, so it may not be what you want. I was paying $25/month for dial up, so it's worth it for me. I cut out my home phone and just use the cells, so I'm actually paying less. The cells have problems, but I deal with it.

Bev is a little on the shy side! She likes to keep that tail tucked!!!

(It's the picture .... ) Bev is as cute as Ann.

Can't wait to see the Silkies. (Did I mention -- I have more Silkie eggs on order?

Sorry to hear about the computer chair! That sucks!!

Congrats on the eggs!
Barb, the chicks are looking great! Don't worry too much about the copper coming in....they can take their time but I suspect that you may be surprised come around 3-4 months of age or so. Keep your eyes peeled. :)

Ha Ha! You are assuming that I get cell phone service here??

Nope! Not where I live. It's land line or nada for me!
