Math Ace: THat is the cutest leghorn ever...
droolin.gif

I thought the Exchequer leghorns were the BOMB until I saw the Buff leghorns in person....
I am really surprised somebody hasn't created a BLUE leghorn!
Between the exchequer and dark brown leghorns, I would think they have everything they need to make a BLUE variety.

Karen,

There is already a thread that shows faults and DQs, Wynette and Math Ace have done lots of work on! https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/517113/marans-sop-discussion-thread

Debbi, thanks for mentioning this!!!! I had stopped following this thread as it was fizzling at best back in Oct/Nov. Now I have lots to read and catch up on. Great stuff--all that I had hoped the thread would be. In all understanding of conformation et al the written word can be less than instructive; specific examples and discussion provides the greatest clarity. Super information ! Thank you to all who have made it a success.

WHAT??? Debbi, I do hope you are on the phone giving out the shipping address...

Did you get an answer to the Black coppers coming from blues? I don't remember seeing that.

The copper breed just like Blue Black and Splash

black to black = 100% black
black to blue = 50% each
blue to blue = 50% blue, 25% splash and 25% black
splash to black = 100% blue
splash to blue = 50% each
splash to splash = 100%

I think that is all....

This is one of two Birchens that have the pure silver coloring instead of the gold-silver and gold-gold coloring
as we discussed previously. Would the Birchen experts in the group please advise me if the comb on this boy
has any faults? I'm not sure I can identify springs, thumbprints and all the other things that can go wrong with combs.
I'm trying to figure out if I can breed with this guy or if I should just take the lot of them to the flea market.
Thanks in advance.

Now that we're all friends again, could the Comb Police please look at the comb of my Birchen roo above and let me know if
he has flaws? I'm new at this and don't know if I should bother breeding him. He has the right coloring, but someone mentioned
"Squirrel Tail" earlier and thought his comb might be wrong. Please advise!

I am new here as are a few others. I have read several hundred pages looking for something and have not come across it. I have searched but admittedly I am poor at internet searches. So, I will just ask my question. We are just getting started with Marans, first a few Birchen then a few splash. About half of the splash have some copper appearing which is not desirable to me. I am wondering since Birchen covers red would I be able to breed my Birchen roo to the Splash hens that show some copper and eliminate that color demonstration? I see a few calling their Splash Copper Splash and a few say Blue Splash. Are these birds bred up in a different manner or is copper in the genetics of all the splash? Thanks for your help in this matter,
T. Michael

Hi!
Your female Splash birds show the copper? I would LOVE to see photos of them.

Quote:
Splash are blue birds, so to me..(no offense to anyone) saying blue splash is an unnecessary step.
I try to refer to my Splash birds Splash Copper as to not imply that they are solid birds with out copper, in fact I try to refer to all of my birds that are of copper genetics as Coppers as to not cause confusion. I used to refer to them a solid birds because they did not show any copper and I was confusing many folks with my terminology.
Many "solid" birds are actually coppers that have been breed so dark that the melanizers essentially cover the copper or red but it is still in the genetics.
Silver will eventually cover some to all of the copper if crossing the copper to the silver, but it is several generations away and lots of hard culling. In the interim, they will most likely produce birds that leak color other than silver in the hackles (on the saddles and wing bow of the males as well) a lemony yellow, brassy gold and even straw or perhaps a darker orangy color.

Correct on the squirrel tail and IMO, I wouldn't use him because of the comb and the tail. The tail wouldn't be so bad if you have very broad females with long backs and a lower tail set than his...if you do you MIGHT have some offspring show up if he was used that have a better tail set.
Will say his Silver is beautiful!!!!!!
Do you have en even closer photo of the comb, specifically the blade at the rear where it shows the sprigs and are the sprigs on both side of the blade?
