Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Cad~ Congrats on the new kids!!!!!

Donna~ Love the new Cuckoos! Looks like you need a roo!!!

Vicki~ Hope you are feeling better. Thank you and Debbi for the comments on the male chick.

Candled this morning it is day 8 and removed 4 clears and 1 quitter.....but like Cadeau, it had been cold for a couple days and nights here so I am sure it effected some of the eggs.

Have collected some more along with some Barnevelder eggs. FINALLY some Barnie eggs!!!!!

I have sooooo much space to work with now since downsizing and getting rid of 6 more makes it even better. Wish it didn't take me down to just 8 Marans though...3 of which are in the laying flock, but I did keep 3 of the last hatch, 1 black, 1 blue and 1 splash.

I am afraid you are right... another roo....

Well the good news is I have my Splash Marans Sold and one Black EE roo too. Now if I can just find someone to eat the rest....

Don't think we will process unless we have to. More trouble than it is worth. If I can get some batteries today I may try to candles some eggies in the bator. Pink did you see you are going to be a grandma?

Yay...barnie eggs for your project! I didn't realize you were so close together with hatching. Katelyn and I are on day 11....I'm so excited to see what happens. I keep thinking about what I will get!

I finally got the call yesterday...monday I have to go in for jury duty. I'm really glad that I put the eggs in and timed them to be my reward for the two weeks of being on call for jury duty. So far the incubator turners have been working like a charm too! Bonus!

Ok, just wanted to share the BEAUTIFUL pullets/hens I got. Blue Cuckoos Someone give me ideas for breeding so I don't have to get another roo or pen... Olive Eggers is all we could come up with in order for me to take them home.

They are TOO pretty

I am going to have to get a cuckoo roo aren't I

They have laid me 5 eggs in 2 1/2 days

Yup, a cuckoo roo or go olive eggers until then.

Love the olive eggs.

Unless you can find or hatch, a solid black or a blue . . .

She has their daddy and he is splash cuckoo.

That would work...I would probably also look for a nice dark laying stock cuckoo roo. He will help sharpen up the pattern and get the color on the eggs as well. Can you tell I like having options when it comes to roos? i don't keep a ton, but whenever possible will keep two that are compatible for a breeding program. Usually ones that have different qualities than the other...

Daddy was out of a decently dark egg and the girls hatched from darker then they are laying so I am hoping they will continue to darken, but yeah I would breed back to daddy. I am not just saying that because I will be rehoming another roo either

I also have a feather legged Cockoo roo in the grow out pen also from darker egged stock.
