Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Donna~ Check and double check temps and humidity levels ...I was reading that even a half of a degree spike in temp can cause this....but I wonder why it only happens on my Black Coppers? The rest of the chickies are all normal and very fluffy.

Well now I have that new digital thermostat so I don't think that will happen now. I don't think it has to do with temp spikes. I think it is something your black coppers just carry. That is not a coincidence that it ONLY happens to the blacks. I have never had that happen before. I have had temps drop and spike and still never had it.

Was he displaying Marans eggs?

I think he was selling them and Marans hens too. He had a flat with some dark Marans eggs and a flat with some hatched shells. He also had a disclaimer that NOT all his Marans would lay that dark. In fact one hen had laid an egg in the cage and it was very light compared to what he was showing.

Pink~ Congrats on the babies!! I had a BCM born like that, I'm thinking it was Pip. I don't recall any temp spikes, but who knows what goes on at night??

No pics yet, waiting for the sun to come out! It's supposed to be sunny and 60s here, but so far...NOT!

But how can that be if these Black Coppers are products of Blue Copper and Splash Copper parents?

Hi,

I've been hatching black sex-linked chicks using Rhode Island Red cockreel over Cuckoo Marans and Barred Rock and have seen some of the 1/2 Cuckoo sex-linked chicks come out like that. Never the 1/2 Barred Rock sex-linked nor pure Rhode Island Reds that are in the same pen as the Cuckoo Marans and being bred to the same cockerel. I didn't know what caused it, I just thought those were chicks that got a bit more stuck to the shell coming out and it ripped off the down

Never occurred to me it could be genetic. I have a digital Sportsman, no temp. fluctuations. I will have to pay more attention now and see if all the Cuckoo sex-linked chicks are coming out like that. I moved 2 of my best Cuckoo Marans pullets in with a CM cockerel to hatch some more pure Cuckoos--I got my first 3 chicks from them, and 2 looked normal. Now that is a whole different story, trying to determine "if" the chicks are coming from the Cuckoo Marans cock or the RIR--I did not leave any time in between switching them--I definitely have one male CM chick, the other two--?? Wow it is really hard to tell the difference between a female CM chick and a male black sex-linked.
