Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

ok, here are some more pics....

she has feathered legs.... so that means blue splah or maran (or mix?)... the hatchery says there are "blue splash" marans that show only the black coloring, no blue. i am assuming that the black expression in the blue maran line is not the same thing as a black copper maran. anyway, you can really see how red she is here!

what do you think???
Definately NOT a Splash chick, and I doubt it's pure Marans! A Splash chick at that age will be a white/yellow color. Hatcheries are not known for their breeding practices, and if they told you that this bird is a Splash Marans, that would prove it to me! Did you send them a picture of this chick?? The leg color is wrong as is the beak and comb color. If you want Marans, it is always best to buy from a reputable breeder. Also, you need to do some homework here as well. Black Copper, Blue Copper, Cuckoo, and Splash are all color varieties of the Marans breed. One color does not make it any more a Marans than another, they are just different colors, but all still Marans. Don't believe everything the hatcheries tell you, chances are, they don't know themselves!

well I sure hope that fellow really follows through and comes and gets your roos!! It also sounds like you might have some buyers for extra birds down your way too eh?

Yes! I think I'll go "Paris Hilton" around here, and start carrying a Silkie in a purse!

That girl really drew attention! I've got a gal to meet on Saturday wanting 2 dozen Silkie hatching eggs. So far, I have 15....goooooo girls goooo!

5 weeks is the earliest I've noticed it. My first BCM.

Speaking of crowing -

FIVE weeks old is your EARLIEST crower?

OMG, I would kill to have a BCM wait FIVE weeks before crowing...

Two weeks is earliest I think I have had..... I dred my BCM, they are terrible about crowing young!
I wouldn't mind having a whole yard FULL of roosters IF they didn't crow!

Well, I am finally caught up on the postings for the past 3 weeks.

About a week ago, there was a discussion about the amount of chit chat on this thread.

Folks who have followed this thread from the very beginning will remember and confirm that this thread used to be all serious.
Folks on other threads were COMPLAINING then about how unfriendly and serious this thread was.
I personally MISS
hit.gif
that thread. I learned so much back then. There were some really great teachers on here

The thread has evolved into a "coffee shop" type atmosphere. Sometimes there are some serious discussions, but mostly
it has become a casual "do Drop in" place where everyone shares ONE thing in common - -- An Interest In Marans.

There are MANY other marans threads out there. Each with their own agenda and their own personality.
This thread is very casual and goes out of its way to be very welcoming to everyone.

I guess the lesson learned is "You can not make EVERYONE happy with ONE thread".
It doesn't mean the folks here are bad.... It doesn't mean this thread is bad....
It just means that you might have to check out one of the other threads if you are looking for a more serious thread!

( OBTW, I would use a smiley here to indicate my tone.... BUT somebody on another thread said smileys were just an excuse for being rude!

Dang, I just can't figure life out sometimes.
