Now how do I go about getting the Marans insert?

Nice hatch.

Thanks- and as promised: a fuzzy butt dried up and fluffy chicks pic...with Teddy. The big chicks next door had Teddy last week and seem to be only using him now (to stand on his head to get higher up in the brooder box (

Sadly the lame one who wasn't getting up had to be culled today. He (she) was spastic and shaking and had a small bulge of pink (spinal cord????) on it's back. It was one I helped hatch (since I was worried about shrink wrapping after last week's hatch) but I guess it wasn't meant to hatch... it wouldn't even stand when supported, it flipped it's head over and seemed to want to be on its side or back. We miss #12, but are so happy with #1-11. It was a great hatch...as I've stated before, for shipped eggs from TX to NJ. Wow!

Ha ha!! Just wait till you can rid yourself of 9 big roos!! What a break in my feed bill!!!

Unfortunately, if won't stay that way here for too much longer, more roos on the way; but at least now I have an outlet for them!

I have 6 big ones that I am going to call the "Guy" to come and get them. Last batch I got rid of was 13! it was so quiet in that shop/barn! For about a week

I had probably 25 at one time. My first few hatches were roo heavy... that was to discourage me from hatching, it didn't work

The key for me is get rid of them before they eat me out of house and home.

Christie, Have you written the APA to ask them? Or maybe ask Walt Leonard here on BYC? Walt's name here is Fowlman. He is an APA judge, and very helpful with all of this.

PINKCHICK....I'll have another 18 eggs for you by Sunday...6 Olive eggs and the rest super-dark Marans....I'll probably leave them at the store for you on sunday evening, unless this is not good...

Thank you! I kinda thought it would be included so did not ask. Then was wondering if the Walt in the book was the same as our Walt. I will pm him. Thanks!

The Marans standard was mailed out in one of the APA newsletters right after they were approved. You may actually have to get it from the Marans Club web site now.

That whole A1 B1 thing... that is the first time I have ever heard of it.

I must of been hiding under a rock somewhere to of missed out on that!

So.... I have a parent A and a Parent B.... They mate and have babies. These are the F1's.

Now, if you mated the babies together.... F1 x F1 you would get the F2s. If you mate those babies together F2 x F2, you get the F3s.
Typically, we won't do this because this would be brother/ sister breedings - RIGHT ? ??

We do Line breeding going back to the parents...

So a daughter mated back to dad would be F1 x bird A and you would get the B1A
NOW if you took those babies and mated them back to bird A, you would be doing line breeding.
B1A x F1 would get you B2A, CORRECT?
Those babies mated back to the orignal parent (B2A x F1) would be called B3A - CORRECT?

Do we have special names for wierd crossings?

For example, I have a B2A that I want to mate to a B1A. What would this be called?
Do I just start fresh with these birds and label them new... P1 x P2 ?

I've been CRAZY busy around here and haven't had time to keep up with the BYC postings

I posted a question right before I left about the SOP and the inclusion of the marans. I don't know if it ever got answered....

Way back when.... Walt said the SOP would do a revised book that included the SOP for marans. They were going to wait until the current stock of SOP books were sold. I have been waiting for this to happen. It would appear by Christie's post that this hasn't occured yet.

Christie ,

When you talk to Walt.... Could you get an idea of when the reprinting will occur? Would you send me a PM when you find out something?
