Quote: Another good book to read this summer.

Seems to me all grains and many of our vegetables have been genetically engineered to be sweeter as well as other features. Tomatos and eeating corn have become much sweeter. In SandHills catalog , they still sell the old corn on the cob types, not the super sweets that we can all abuy at the local supermarket. THe grind is also important. THe finer the grind , the more like sugar; quick to be digested and dumped into the blood as glucose. My kids now eat steel cut oats instead of rolled oats. WHat does the book say about other crops??

ok, so I have a question. Being new to chickens, I am reading these threads. So, I'm reading about people who go out and find their chickens dead. What do they die of? What do I need to be aware of to keep my chickens alive? Are these chickens dieing of old age? How long do they live? Are they eating the wrong thing, plants, food? Trying to learn what to expect. I will be awfully sad if one of my chickens died.
Well sure, it is a sad thing, but it's part of life and of raising chickens. This time of year and for the next few months, a lot of deaths occur due to the heat and humidity. All you can do is your best to prevent it, like providing cool, fresh water all the time, shade, a dry dust bath area, and fans if necessary. Then there are dogs, other predators, stress, parasites, storms, old age, egg bound hens, and on and on. If you raise chickens, it will happen eventually. Take care of them the best you can, and enjoy them while they are here. That's all any of us can do.

Thanks, Debbi. You mentioned storms. What happens when it storms to kill a chicken?
there can be several things, but the most common is dogpiling. There's also ocassionally will be a bird that will die from what I can only assume would be shock (heartattack type stuff) and also if a bird get stuck out in a storm and gets soaked, they sometimes will get sick.

Arielle, another good book to read is Master Your Metabolism by Jillian Michaels. It is all about the processed food and the genetically modified grains out there. Corn is another GMO food that is causing a lot of problems like man boobs....too much estrogen in the grain! She says our bodies don't recognize the chemistry of these new GMO foods so the body doesn't know what to do with them. The body, not recongizing the food receives confusing hormonelike signals from the toxins in the food and mistakenly releases the wrong hormones in response. These toxins are "endocrine disruptors" and they trick the body into reacting (and often overreacting) to their signals, disrupting the normal, healthy functioning of your system. It is also a life changing book. I think everyone who has heart or diabetes problems should read this book! It's an eye opener!

Another interesting book to read.

We do not make enough food to feed our planet good foods. Too much of our grocery dollars are used to buy crap. THEn we turn around and need to buy medicines. Obviously, I'm simplifying the situation. But I see so many people without food and they are handed junk at the food pantries. Makes me sad. THe poor get poorer.

I do think we as a nation eat waaay too much corn and other grains. Eat the greens--who eats 3 cups of greens a day? Too few people eat enough good vegetable in a day. Rather we fill up on cereals and white breads and more grains. We seem to be missing the green leafy vegies. Flower you present another valid reason to eat my vegies. LOL

mornin all! I can't believe it....its sunny today! Maybe some of this mud will dry up again. I know its getting old trudging around tryin to get stuff done outside. Hoping to see what I might be able to get for photos today.
