Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

The gold would be a DQ if they were admitted. It only shows on some chicks so keep an eye out for it and don't breed them. My one BIG offender is not in the breeding pens now.... I am VERY tempted to hatch them and see if it goes away. I have 17 eggs STARING at me to be hatched. They are such GOOD layers. I have been getting 4 eggs a day from 4 hens.

Donna
I will definately keep an eye out for the red in the cuckoos and put the pullets with the layers (instead of the breeding pens) I am really happy that the lavs are EE. They are so cute...
Here are the promises pictures....

I think I have a lot of roos....
There is a trade\sale in Sept, so if I don't get the red in them, I will trade for another roo.....

I can't thank you enough Donna... I think they are the cutest calmest little babies ever.
If they have the red.. So be it... I will eat the roos and just use the pullets in the layer group...

Thanks again.
Patricia

I think those are blue EE not lavender, sorry. Lavender will not have lacing on the wings like that. I see a lot of roos too. I don't see any gold. I think I have a little roo that has GREAT leg feathers and so far no GOLD at about 6 weeks or so

But it just takes one feather.

Since my GOLDEST pullet is not in the breeding pen, I may save the eggs from this week and set them.... I have some Wheatens I need to set ( I know I am done hatching, but this is SPECIAL right?)

Donna, I haven't seen any leakage in my crew yet--is there a particular age when you started noticing the leakage.
I have seen it in a pullet about 1.5 months..... she maybe the only one.... I don't think I have seen it on the others.... I need to look REALLY hard tomorrow. I may be over reacting... but I don't think so.

That would explain the serious chicken math... I must have a chicken headache.....
Y' all..... Just keep wondering if my cuckoos will cluck with a bit of southern drawl.... Lol you seemed so surprised to see the EH.... It had to spring out eventually.

Congrats on a great hatch!!

blech...sounds like the weather is spaced out about right...I'll get 102-104 wed, then Debbi thursday, then you....no good.

I'm not sure about taking birds to the sale tomorrow, just gonna play it by ear since they keep upping the temps on us...now I see wed and thursday over 100 here, so might detract people going to the sale. I can always use the day to do a million other things, but was really hoping to thin out some of the birds....esp the younger ones. Decisions, decisions....
blech....sounds like a miserable week.

hope everyone does okay and that you still get to thin out!!
