Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Hello all..... another question for you. I have a blue marans pullet that so far appears to be a solid blue. I love her coloring.... she is however fairly clean legged. I understand this is not desirable, but I still considered breeding her. Then I noticed she grew an extra toenail on each foot. See picture..... is this a genetic thing that will pass on to her offspring or just a fluke thing??? If she goes then I will have just ONE blue copper pullet left..... I will need more lol. Thoughts please

I would not breed her. I would think that would be genetic and would breed forward!

Could anyone give me the name of a good incubator? I am thinking about hatching eggs. I have never done it before. Would like a good one but not overly big. Maybe 24-30 egg capacity. Would like one that is pretty much automated to do all the turning, etc. Thanks for any recommendations.

Sorry, you will get some really nice big eating eggs from her.

Got more pics of that BLUE sister? I think she is a Lavender Am.

My big one is homemade, but the wife bought a Hovabator and it was easy enough. The turner is purchased separate.

I'm a HUGE fan of the Brinsea Octagon Advantage with automatic turner and humidity pump. Just set it up, set your numbers, and walk away. Day 18, shut off the turner, crank the humidity and walk away again. It's pricey but worth it's weight in gold with valuable eggs. My only complaint, tight fit and lack of head room.

I was hoping for no gold... but that's ok... she'll make a good layer.
I will try and get more photos of the Lav. I had two hatch (almost lost one, she was the last and she was stuck and I had to wash her twice to get the stuck on egg white... poor thing is just now showing size and feathers)

Here is a photo from last week.....

That top one looks like a lav the others are blue. Lavenders just look different.... more silver and don't have any lacing on the wings. Her legs are lighter color too. The other 2 pics are not the same chick. The Lavender will have a flat pea comb. GO FIND HER!!!! You got lucky there! I only get one Lav for every 6 chicks

So much for 50/50 odds huh!
