Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

About all you can do, except maybe antibiotics if they get too bad? The weather here is reported to be at 100*, but on my shaded porch, it is reading 106*! It is 96* in the house!! So far, the only one showing any stress from all of this, is my old girl dog, Uma. At 14 1/2 years, she is starting to peter out on me. She has not eaten much in the last couple of days, and I am bracing myself for the worst case scenario. God not now, I just couldn't take it...
Awww....lady! I sure hope she does alright! Have you tried putting ice packs or at least cool bottles of water next to her when she's sleeping? Do you think you might have a break in this extreme weather soon?

No, haven't tried the ice bottles, may do that one tonight, although she is a bit fussy about stuff like that, lol. Been adding electrolytes to their water, and the princess demands it to be brought to her, poor girl, which I do numerous times a day, and night. Looks like thursday we may have a chance of rain, like 50%, which is much better than it has been. This ground is rock hard now, and I don't know if my neighbor's backhoe could even dig her grave, if it comes to that? Looks like another very hot and restless night here, and the flies are about to drive me CRAZY!!!!

Just tried to rouse the old gal from sleep to get her some water, and I thought she was dead. Nope, just sleeping good, and gave me a hateful look, and took a few obligatory laps of water. Put a vinegar jug of water in the freezer for her tonight...

good deal. When it is ready to go, you might want to wrap it in a towel...it will stay cooler a bit longer and won't feel as awkward. I'm praying for your girl. I know the pain of losing a best friend like that and hope you can keep her a while longer

Ok, who says chickens are stupid?? I just put some ( a lot) ice cubes in the chick waterer for the 3 lone Marans who are still in the house.Turn around to fill their feeder, turn back, and Wheatie Pie is sitting on top of the waterer. If looks could speak, she was saying, "Ahhhhhhhhh..."

Pretty smart for a chicken so young!

Aww - so cute!

Good thoughts for Uma.

My old mare is struggling with the heat, as well.

Been busy with hosting a wedding and the related photography and coping with drought and heat so I haven't even been reading the boards for a couple of weeks but I'm trying to get back to normal

.... updates of broody Naima with the Marans kids .... 3 weeks old. I'm thinking 3 boys at this point, 2 blue coppers and a splash <sigh>

Debbi hope Uma is OK....

Vicki and Debbi .... doing the rain dance for ya!

Hatch update... today was lockdown. I had a visitor and was showing them the mega bator and 5 little chickies were on the floor. Fell 3 feet! IDK what happened, but 3 marans and 2 wheatens were out 1 wheaten was shrink wrapped one more pipped. 1 Marans was pipping when I left. I had to just toss them in the unheated hatcher (no biggie it was 90 degrees + by default and is always about 60+% humidity) I am sure the humidity is up because I had to wrap the one in a wet paper towel to get him out. What a little mess he was. I am happy to have any hatch with my humidity issues and turner issues.

Barb, for what it's worth, the Splash looks like a pullet to me, and I'm not quite sure, but one of your blues is or isn't either? First pic I would say pullet, roo, pullet. Some are just harder to tell than others, especially with mixed or new lines. JMO :)

I sure hope your mare pulls through all of this. We've had summers like this before, no biggy, but I don't remember these dry spells lasting this long, as well as the high heat. Something has to give, and it had better do it soon! I'm not a big water drinker, but I've consumed more water in the last month that I have in the last 2 years! Might be a good thing for me, I keep reminding myself that some people pay for this kind of heat and humidity in spas!!
