Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Hi Everyone,
I come on here and read once in a while. I do not breed, but I have BCM's from a breeder. I got them at one week old and raised them from babies. They were born the last week of March. I would like to introduce you to my girls as well as a pretty roo I gave to my brother.

This is Marion. She is the top of the pecking order.

This is Maggie. her coloring is wrong, and she is the runt of the group, but is the most easy going girl in the group. Her personality is wonderful.

This is Michelle. She is the biggest of the three. I always call her the one with the hairy legs....lol

Here is the roo I gave to my brother because my hubby won't let me have one. He has a boo boo on his comb because he was being a bad boy and chased my brother's wife out of the run and got his comb shut in the door.

Some of my first eggs. The first one was laid by my Buff Orpington. The second was laid by Michelle, and the third one was laid by Maggie. Not perfect, but very delicious!

Thanks for looking!

I've had chicks drown in the chick wateres too. IMO the waterers need much space around them so a little flock of chicks cannot bottle neck passing by the waterer and the side of the brooder. So sad to see a drown chick. I've had it happen for no apparent reason either. I like to use the 1 qt waterers now because of the smaller drinking area--narrower than the 1 qt size; and fill with marbles. I steal my boys marbles ( but don't feel too bad because I'm the one that bought the marbles. LOL)

Hey Donna, I've got something for you to look at again here in the next day or so. Been working on the club website some more and wanted to see what you thought of the changes.

How's the culling down for winter going over your way? I'm doing pretty good, still have quite a few to cull, but processing a few each week and selling off started pairs as I can find time. Its looking like I've got another blue copper boy that is showing potential. I am gonna be culling the first blue copper boy as he is still having problems in developing properly in his hip placement. I think he's just growing too fast for his own good, and honestly can't see him coming out of it. Its too bad, cause he's gorgeous, but don't think he will make a good breeder.

I have gotten sick AGAIN!

so everything has come to a complete hault again. I have a few pics of some pullets I am growing out. I will send them to you and Kim as 1 is from her birds. The blue girls are TANKS... well they seem that way to me anyway. I really need to get in those growout pens. I got an egg from my WL in those pens yesterday

and I am pretty sure 1 or 2 from the other pen of Marans is laying. I need to get them moved ASAP. I need the growout pens for the other pullets I have in the shop. I would LOVE to not have so many birds in the shop over the winter.

These last few hatches of Marans I am going to keep the roos for a while and see if I get anything worth keeping as a back up.

I have had my first case of Cocci.... yesterday I found my SLW I got from Foley dead and lots of bloody poo all over

I cleaned the brooder so they would not eat it anymore than they had to and added Corrid to the water dosed each one with corrid and bought some fresh med feed just in case what I had was not working because it was older. I found a little chick dead in another brooder (I had them in the same pen for a few hours while I did some cleaning) A little bloody poo in there so they are ALL getting treated now.

Nobody seemed sick the day before, it was VERY quick. I just don't know how they got it. They are inside with no contact with the outside world. I need to sweep a little today and spray with Oxine in the shop on the floor to keep it from spreading anymore. The clean the broom

hubby thinks I am a clean freak when it comes to germs, maybe I am.

How is your dad getting along? Have you heard from Debbi? Did she get a handle on her predators?

That's too bad lady! Hope you get to feeling better and that you can get the cocci under control. I think that environmental factor, like humidity and etc can affect the speed of cocci spreading, if I remember right.

My dad's doing pretty good, he can be a handful sometimes when he sets his mind to doing something, like trying to go outside alone. There any number of ways he can seriously hurt himself, so we'll have to keep on him I think.
I haven't heard from her since she told me she was having predator problems. I have written her, but hope she's ok!

That is one dark egg! I would consider that one a strong 8! Congrats on that one. Are you planning on hatching any o zf these eggs?
it's so funny, I got this egg from a breeder that I purchased RIR pullets from and she did not have a fourth so she gave me the maran, but she was not sure what they were. I posted here and people said she was a copper maran, some said sex link . Not sure what she was until one day she laid and man it was beautiful ! She has laid these dark eggs every time. I wish I could breed her, but I live in the city so can not have any roosters. She iis the sweetest smartest girl. We love her. Thank you, not sure what an 8 is but if it's in a class of chocolate that's awesome ! Thank you :)
