Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Here's a few more pics of the youngest hatches of the year for ya Don. I bribed them with some treats, so hopefully will give you a better idea of some of the body types on the girls. The cockerel is one of my other hopefuls. He is solid, but in his lanky stage with my favorite darker tone of copper. I just can't help loving it!

Hubby asked me last night, how are you going to make them stay still while you draw something on those little feet

I think he thinks I am going to tattoo a pic of a chicken on them

Toe marking , I have always used the punch and the slit . For the slit just use a shark knife and a piece of wood, one slit down the middle of the web, will not grow together like some of the small chick toe punch sold by supply houses.

Vicki, All of these Marans look alike so not really anything I can say except good job working with them.

One question what is the low spot in the middle of the BC back. Something looks a little off there.

Vicki, I see that the female Marans in the pictures have nice dark Soft feathering. The young male looks to have the unwanted Brown soft feathering below the vent area. This will breed forward if it is indeed brown soft feathering.

Donna, If I remember right a while back you had a cocci problem, do you use wire floor brooders ? Be glad to go over my method if you would like to see.

Yeah...first out break. I think i have it under controll. Only lost 4or chicks. I do not have wire floors for brooders. Please share your setup.
