Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Walt, the part about the Mulberry signifying too much Melanizers is in my mind completely false. When I had Brown Red and Birchen Moderns the Dark face birds always had the nicest colored feathers and plenty of them. I guess we can look forward to another mess like the Black Copper.
Don, these are not Moderns we're talking about, though. Does that not make a difference? I would think it would, but I am not an expert.

This is one of my questions/concerns as well, that I stated earlier in this discussion, can't remember, but might have been yesterday. The Marans I've had that had the mulberry face in the birchens have really nice silver, and is crisper than others. So many things to consider and think about.

gilavina - would you kindly post an example of each of yours? Red faced, mulberry faced?
I'll have to see if I can try to find some time when I'm picking out birds for show. At the moment, I'm working on entries and spreadsheets.....

to the spreadsheet part haha

Okie dokie - just get pics of faces if you can - that way you don't have to worry about anything other than color. I'm just curious, as I'm sure other folks are.

Walt, if Mulberry would be the accepted color then it would be a 2 point deduction for red, that is the way I read the SOP.

That is correct as well.

The members of the Marans community need to weigh in on these differences while the Standards are being considered. There are examples of breed colors that are slightly different than other breeds having the same color designation, so the APA can't hold a breed to a color description that will not work. After I see the official color description, we can talk about it. As of now all I know about birchen Marans is what I read here. The pics of birchen Marans on the French site appear to have red faces, wattles and combs.

Walt, are all Birchen varieties calling for mulberry faces currently, or do some call for red?

(edited for clarification)

Around here in shows, the mulberry is definitely more prevalent in the silver birchens in different breeds. I'm gonna take a break and see if I can go get a couple of pics. I found some pics on my computer too that I'll post, these will show the more mulberry face as well as the difference in the quality of the birchen color itself. I don't know if I can get any of the boys, where I have them separated out freeranging with the goats at the moment, since I'm trying to keep my girls feathers in condition. Most of my boys do have more red in the face, but when younger have the darker face.
