Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Can someone give me a list or reference of shows in the Southeast that I could take Marans to? I am a complete newbie when it comes to chickens. I have some Silkies and have people to go to for them, but I really want brown eggs... But I want to show Marans too. Anyone? I am located in East Alabama.

Thanks,
Tina
Tina, there is a new website called http://www.poultryshowcentral.com/ Valerie has filled an important gap.
I invite everyone to visit. And much easier to find shows than the Poultry Press.

Just another friendly reminder that the deadline for egg entries will be
November 2nd, which is next thursday for those mailing them in. We are working
hard to promote the Marans in our area and get some exposure for them through
the egg show, so am hoping for a good turnout. Its the perfect platform for
discussing the Marans and spreading interest. Particularly as we are going to
have a large number of first time exhibitors and have increased our youth
exhibitors exponentially from the last several years.

The egg show entry form can be found here under the files category of the Marans Yahoo Group, or you can go to www.nestatepoultryshow.com under the catalog tab and find the entry form
and guidelines. Each entry consists of 3 eggs and are $5 per entry. Please PM me for my address and with any questions you might have!

Thanks!

No just that we should never judge an olde bird in the bushes without taking a look first.
Well, this is intriguing! I look forward to meeting you, Don...and good thoughts are with you today & always!

Hi

Some of the club members will be going to a show in Shawnee Alabama later this year. If you are a member of the Marans Chicken Club USA it will be announced before hand.

The silver Birchen Marans is a black bird with silver on it's hackle, saddle and wing bows. It has a red comb and wattles with golden eyes. The shanks have a pink dermis and slate epidermis. There is no lacing on the breast.

Very often when a bird is young it's face will look a bit on the dark side but as it gets older the red comes in and there' no sign of mulberry.

Thank you for the description and show info!

Hi Bev! Hope you are doing well! Thanks for posting this information. Question? Seeing that Black Coppers, Blue Coppers and Splash Coppers are Birchen and are named according to colors, what are the chances of the Silvers being similarly named like the coppers? Such as Silver Black Marans and Silver Blue Marans, etc.. and not referring to them by the pattern name that both the coppers and the silvers share? After all, we don't refer to the copper varieties as Copper Birchens, so why refer to the Silver differently? I find and many folks that contact me also find that it is confusing. Thanks in advance!
