Mass Chick Death- WHAT COULD HAVE HAPPENED???

I said the exact same thing! And that’s the scary one... The teeth were plenty scary, and I was an expected visit... I’d not want to be a trespasser there (my goal is to have some dogs like that for our shirtless, manbunned, hippie trespassers/campers!) not “aggressive”, but good protectors and deterrents. Super sweet dogs once they are introduced though, well trained.

They are a working dog & *nippers* ~ but highly intelligent. My man likes them but they do need to be worked or they turn ugly ~ which is one reason I won't have one.

Only 1 looks like a pure breed to me ~ but I've found there are differences in breed between here & North America so I wouldn't really know.

Good working dogs... with a good home! You’re absolutely right in them needing a job or they get squirrelly, our border collies are the same way. Everyone thinks “big dogs” are intimidating, but it’s the herding breeds that I find the most assertive. I want to (and often do) cuddle pretty much every pitbull, mastiff, and Rottweiler I meet; but when a herding breed wants you to stay put, or get off their territory, or do pretty much anything, there’s not much arguing with them!

But, please, see what agricultural authorities would want to know about something contagious and have a couple birds necropsied if there is a recurrence. Your neighbors and the province might have reason to thank you for swift containment of anything that could take hold.

I once got exposed to Hepatitis in a BC health restaurant (Capers, remember it?). The province was swift to recognize the danger and contain it. It was MOST impressive. And I can't imagine you don't have agricultural authorities equally up to task of protecting British Columbians and British Columbian livestock.

It's the small yappy breeds frighten me. They're biters. I'm not keen on any untrained dog; they can be unpredictable & I stopped walking a certain route here because of roaming pitbulls. They started stalking me & working me. I had to carry a big stick to fend them off & even so, one more dog & I would have been in trouble. I love well trained dogs. Our neighbour has a blue cattle dog. Beautiful animal. Extremely well trained but ~ oh.my. The exercise he needs! They dump him out of the truck @ the bottom of our road & he races them home & still has heaps of energy.

Oh! Let me guess... the West Van Capers? (I worked for the company that bought them for 10 years!) there were some pretty hard feelings about the closure of that location, but it was on the verge of being condemned when the chain was bought out.

Our BC regulations are pretty spot on, and Agriculture is very well managed (way more so than the grocery industry!) WestCoast Farm is really good about bio security and healthy birds, I’m sure if there’s any further incidents they will follow the appropriate procedures. I mean with what’s happening CA right now... it’s scary business!

We lived on the North Shore so if I went to Capers it was the tiny one in Dundarave (I think) or the larger one on Georgia (or was it Robson?). That one day I wandered over to West Van and thought I'd catch a salad before I headed back over the bridge...

Next time we were in Vancouver all the Capers were gone and huge Whole Foods had taken their place. In fact the whole grocery shopping scene had changed from great public markets supplanting small groceries to huge showcase markets and dwindling public markets. So sad there isn't room for both.

The only Capers that got demolished was the West Van one, the others are all still there, Kitsilano and Robson... but bought out by Whole Foods, which was a decent store back then. The Capers stores have stayed mostly the same except for some product changes, and staff got generous buy out offers or transfers to other stores, often with promotions. 6 of the Dundrave employees are still at West Van A lot of people do miss the West Van Capers, but there were serious structural problems with the building, mold issues, and problems with the coolers. I miss the glory days of Londsale Quay... the noise, bustle, fish counter, little produce vendors, ice cream, and buskers out in the courtyard playing live music...
