Mass Chick Death- WHAT COULD HAVE HAPPENED???

Why don’t you send a couple of those birds off for a necropsy? That was suggested by several right after your first post.
I haven’t heard you validate that idea. Is there an impediment to that?
There sure is a lot of speculation going on.

Also, it’s hard to find vets that deal with livestock here to do one... granted they have at least one in their area that *might* do it. Our farm had to have a necropsy done on a lamb once while my husband and I lived in the city... the body had to be flown in to the mainland, where we picked it up from the airport and then had a two hour drive to the ministry of agriculture out in Langley... (it’s not always as easy as the local university or extension office)

Thanks for letting me know about CAN.
In most states in the US they make it very easy.

Were you by any chance using a teflon coated brooder bulb? Teflon fumes can and have killed large numbers of chicks.

Just like teflon cooking pans (especially used at high heat) give off fumes that can/will kill house pet birds
OP was using a Premier 1 heating plate.
Her older chicks had a heat lamp, but they did not die.

One of those looks like an Australian cattle dog... you don't, do you...?
I said the exact same thing! And that’s the scary one... The teeth were plenty scary, and I was an expected visit... I’d not want to be a trespasser there (my goal is to have some dogs like that for our shirtless, manbunned, hippie trespassers/campers!) not “aggressive”, but good protectors and deterrents. Super sweet dogs once they are introduced though, well trained.
