Just found 2 pipped!Hopefully the temp didn't effect them. Keep them in the same position and as long as no external pips you can take them out and candle them to look for movement. I wouldn't worry about the opening and closing of the incubator at this point
My younger roo, almost a year old, seems very protective of the chicks in the coop. If I pet one or pick it up and it makes a fuss he is right in there talking. So far he has been good but I don't give him my back just in case. My older roo, 2 yrs old, is the one that I need to watch when anyone other than me goes in there. Which is funny since the younger one now calls the ladies for treats, calls them under the coop if he is nervous about something etc.Put the chick back in with momma (got pecked a few times, but otherwise she was good) and I *think* another egg hatched. I'm super careful around these birds as dad gets extra protective of his babies, even though otherwise he's a sweetheart that I can handle with no issues and lets me pick up and cuddle all the time.
Got some really interesting colours (shoulda taken pics before I put that chick back in, doh!). Normally, I get chipmunks, but this one and it's one sibling I saw were silver chipmunks! Really interested in how they're going to turn out!
Congratulations! I still have never had all eggs at lockdown hatch. Pretty amazing! Out of curiosity what incubator did you use?My hatch is over, the last egg hatched last night. 16 hatched out of 16 eggs that made it to lockdown. I had 6 clears and 2 early quitters but all the rest hatched! I lovemy new incubator.
The only issue was that many chicks hatched with open navels this time, possibly an issue with the humidity being too high. They all healed up while they were drying off though.
Now I have to face the problem of where to put 16 3 week olds and 16 day olds! Might see if I can sell a few. I will take a break from hatching now, at least until I know how many females I have.
8 feet x 10 feet should be fine! I think Big Bird himself would fit through that!I know this is not the spot to ask this question but hoping for more answers from here. Who here has an automatic coop door and bigger chickens (brahma and Cochins are my biggest)? Is an 8x10 door big enough for them????
