May Hatch-a-Long!

Day 13 for my quail eggs. The incubator has been running a little cool, but I'm hoping it's just the eggs generating enough heat to trip the thermostat. The thermostat probe is in the middle of the eggs and the thermometer is off to the side.

Tomorrow I will candle and start lockdown. I'm still having trouble finding an acceptable brooder bulb; the local hardware store only had incandescent bulbs up to 60w and that won't get me to 95 degrees. I will have to try a reptile shop in the next few days.

You don't have to wait as long for quail as chickens, that's for sure. I'm on Day 12 and it's going rather slowly. Still not quite 2/3 done. Good luck with your hatch!

Here are my bantam May hatchlings hatch yesterday while i was on way home from my vacation, The rooster is a mixed bantam of what i dont know he was givin to me & hen is pure OEG bb red bantam, 5 hatch so far here's my new babys

I posted a picture of my eggs in the incubator on my Facebook the other day. Now, I do consider my best friend to be incredibly intelligent. She's a Berkley grad student. So I was a little surprised when she asked how many chicks were going to hatch. I replied, "silly, don't you know you're not supposed to count your chickens before they hatch?? The best I can do is candle them later to see how many are developing." And she then said, "yeah yeah, but how many? 50%? Or what?"
Face palm! So much for her being a smarty pants! lol

This was on day 1, at least now that's it's day 10 I can tell who's still alive and kickin in there. Only had to pull 3 clears and a blood ring. I took a great little video that shows the embryo moving around in one of the eggs but YouTube isn't letting me upload it from my phone. Here's a picture of the blood ring egg. For science!

So I have some newbie questions in regards to hatching chickens. What should I expect by day 21? Should I expect moving and some pipping? A hatched chick or two? When should call the hatch quits?
