May trade for a new horse thoughts please?

So we will start with the free chestnut 18 year old gelding.

No one to be found....no one would answer the phone.

I got a video of this horse through the fence and this was at the end of seeing the horses. He would not come to the fence like all the other horses. He does have several bite marks. He drags his feet down toe first to the ground and seems very very slow and lethargic. My husband first seen him walking and said I would not let you get that horse. My husband has absolutely no knowledge or interest in horses and could tell something is wrong and way worse when he first seen him walking. I could not record then cause all the other horses were in the way. This is the only one there in this poor of condition. The owner said on the phone this horse had not been ridden in 2 years and I wanted her to ride first and she said no problem on the phone. When it came down to it she wouldn't I guess.

He is not near as skinny as the black gelding but his poor legs are just in really sad shape. Why I don't know. Lame? Arthritis?

Next the black gelding.....Oh my gosh is this big man lazy! Gets a little bit of an attitude himself when asked to do things he don't wanna do. I think he could use some more training and spurs....and a ton of medical help and nutrition. No vet records and no teeth floated this year.

I really like him though. He has a gash under the left side of his chin I did not get a pic of that.....all bloody crusted fairly new though and I did point it out to her.
Several bite marks also. I do worry about his back feet doing the same dragging and pointing toe to ground first just a bit he is not as lethargic looking to me and it looks like the cross a bit in the back.

I want to save him from that place he is rough medically and so out of shape. I feel really bad for him.

Right at the end though the owner mention something about a trailer....needing to be tall and wide for him and I don't have one either. I don't know if he would fit in mine. Hers looked bigger and she said he barely fits in hers he does not like it cause its so tight. Looked as though there was a lot of food there 3 huge piles plus whats in the pasture. He does need worked with in just basic things like holding his back feet up he was jerking not just standing there. His privates were very dirty.

I think I would only trade one cow considering his condition. I just worry about the trailer. I need to be able to take him places. The owner fell while running after him to get him to canter on one video so out of respect for her it is not on here that is embarrassing of course.

This link is for all the pics and most of his videos.....once you get on click the link and it comes up you can go next and previous.

yes it does take time in finding the right horse be it free or not or trading, it's like buying a house, car, computer, you have to really look at what is comming you way.

I watched both videos so far, and I think you are absolutely right about the chesnut gelding. He is definitely walking on his tippy toes, and something about the way his back ties in with his hind quarters really bothers me. I would definitely be concerned about putting anyone on him to ride. Seems to me like his only job should be as pasture mate!

The black gelding concerns me. He's definitely got an issue with his back left leg, but I can't tell if that's the only leg he's having a problem with. He's also very agitated, as his tail was swishing back and forth quite a bit! This could be pain related, but it could also be due to the fact that he just didn't want to be ridden. He was definitely giving the rider a lot of issues. The whole video I couldn't really tell what she wanted him to do (I don't know if it's because he just wasn't doing it, or she's just not an experienced rider) Looked like she was kicking him the whole video and a few times he got annoyed and did a little hop. He was definitely not happy with being under saddle. In my honest opinion, I think you should say no to him. He could be worked with, but it seems like you would be better off having a horse you can regain confidence on rather than a horse you have to "fix" a bunch of problems on. Also, I have a feeling the issue in his back legs will cause a problem with riding.

The right horse IS out there. When I was looking to buy a horse, I felt like I would never find the right one. It is good to get practice saying no though. For many, that's the hardest part!

Hey Terina (great name by the way) -

Don't worry about getting things uploaded just for us gawkers, especially the horses that are no goes. (ok, maybe the video of the one bucking).

As far as skipping the photo ads as suggested by Pat, I like looking at the photos. All of my dogs are rescues and I went to look at them based on their photos. Same with the horses - I have a thing for pintos.

I'm single and when I was dating and doing the internet dating thing, I didn't even look at the profiles without photos.

For me, I want to know what I'm looking at. I want to know if I have a connection and/or find one appealing to me.

I'll post some ads as I see em. Though your additional challenge is finding someone that wants to trade some cattle or would you look at a horse for sale in addition to free?

Thank you I have always-ed liked my name I know a lot of people wish they had a different name.

I like the pictures too....the guy in hermiston I talked to a few days ago he said he would take two cow for one horse too. I asked him for pictures by text and called 2 times and goes to voice mail. I won't be going if he don't send me pics too far to go if not even interested in the looks of anything. I am not soley basing the way they are on the looks of the horse in the pics either. When I seen the black gelding I just wanted to cry for him.....he looks soooo bad in person way worse then those other 2 pics that she sent me originally. I can tell the difference but it does give you an idea of whats there if anything might be there you are interested in.

I would prefer to get rid of these cows some way thats what kinda got this started sooner then would have. The cows are a mess and a pain and eat too much. I buy half a ton of hay and it is gone in 3 weeks 1-2 bales to my filly and the rest to the cows. These are huge 100 pound plus bales.

The cows are a year old and don't want to deal with them through the winter and my freezers are too full. I have them advertised for sale too but not much luck so far last couple weeks. I though trade maybe the easier way for some.

I would look at all offers.

Thank you!

One video on the chestnut but there is several pictures and videos on the black gelding same link you click on the link and then next/previous in the upper right I believe. Maybe you seen all them but you said both so wanted to make sure you knew there were several on the black gelding.

The one video she is trying to get him to trot and he will hardly do it thats why I said the spurs and some training he is lazy and stubborn. She got him to trot a bit better on a lunge line with the whip. He was getting mad when he hopped his back and then front hopped it was real fast. On the lunge line he kept throwing his head and I think he would rear the more you pushed him.

Just walking under saddle he seemed fine it was when he was made to work anything more than a walk he did not like it.

Yeah, I did click through the other videos and pictures. The other ones weren't so bad. He took the bit nicely and stood well while she worked around him.

I think the first video was definitely the most telling though! I definitely saw that potential for him to do something stupid if he was pushed. Something was definitely bothering him, whether it was pain or just stubborness, I'm not sure. I think in this day, you can definitely find a more broke horse for free or trade! This one needs work and vetting. If the vetting reveals he does indeed have an issue in the back end, then his behavioral issues might be from the pain and not so much lack of training. However, I personally would stay far away from anything that showed visible issues in the feet or legs. It just causes me too much worry! There are some lameness issues (as Pat mentioned) that you could probably over look for what you want to do, but I would definitely look at many horses before deciding on one with a lameness problem. Chances are, you'll have plenty of time to make a decision on any horse since the market is so terrible, so never feel rushed to make a decision!

Looks like you are on the right track though, with pictures and videos!

Maybe I missed it... but what kind of horse are you looking for? What job are you planning to do with it?

She is looking for an experienced trail horse to get back into riding.

Terina -

Since you are open to all offers, last night I found two horses on Craigslist that I would go look at if I was in the market for a great trail horse. Both horses were listed as experienced trail horses and I believe one mare was 12 and the other 15. Great ages in my opinion.

I'm at work where Craigslist is blocked, so I will have to get the links later today.

When I was looking for my first horse at age 45, I read up on everything horses for a year. Came to the conclusion I wanted a gaited horse for the comfort out on the trail. No bouncy trotters for me - thank you.

Two horses posted - a rocky mountain horse (hard to come by in the NW. That was the horse I REALLY wanted to get but 6 yrs ago they were going for $7000-10,000. This one is listed for $1500.00, 15 h, barefoot (tough feet). They have a very smooth gate, walk, running walk. Very stout and just great horses in my opinion.

The other is a 15 h Tennessee walker. My walker had a very smooth walk, running walk though she would trot if out on the trail following another trotter.

I'll post links with pics as soon as I can. Great day - Nancy
