May trade for a new horse thoughts please?

I will contact them today. I have court with my son here shortly so it will be later before I get back. Last Monday we were there the rest of the business day urrghh! My only issue at the moment is $ but I will see what they say. How much would he eat? I am not worried about the cost of feed just curious. Everyone is feed well around here it is just hard sometimes to come up with a lot of extra money at once. If I had that much money at once would that be the smartest thing to spend it on even though I want it....there are things I am sure we need worse.

I had a team of Perchies for a bunch of years. They ate about the same amount of grain as my QHs and maybe a flake or so more of good hay apiece--not really more expensive to feed. BUT the wormers I had to buy 2 apiece to get enough for their weight. They weighed 2000+ lbs each. Nobody would EVER believe that looking at them, not even the vet. But the weigh station slips did prove it.

Calle collicked once while being shipped cross-country and we were able to find a vet in a strange town to treat her. He finally said he had no choice but to put her down. He gave her the shot and said to come back in an hour. Which we did. He all but dropped his teeth when we all walked back together to her stall and found her standing quietly munching hay, having made 2 piles of manure and now feeling better. But, he thought she was about 1250 lbs, so that is the dose he gave her. Nothing I said made him change his opinion. I have always thought that what he actually did do was finally give her enough to relieve her pain!!!

But Percherons are a great breed. They are sweet and gentle. And when they run, the ground shakes!!

Cricket sounds like a really good possibility. Let us know how this all works out!

She's half Quarter Horse. That cross tends to make a very stocky offspring, but she's not very tall - and about 1450 lbs...and not extreme.

On the other hand, my friend had an old fashioned black Percheron that was only 15.2 and weighed well over 1700 lbs! We jokingly called him 'Pot Roast'. He looked wider than he was tall, but he NEVER 'shook the ground'. He was very light on himself.

I think you misunderstood me.....I have a issue with the e
3000 dollars at once. I said everyone is feed well that is not a problem. I just raised 2 cows and 2 before that along with my arab filly so feed is not a problem. I don't feed crappy hay either is good green grass hay....I also have access to the same in alfalfa. They deliver to me too for same going price around here so they load and unload which is nice and they are just a few min away. I was just wanting to get an idea what a horse like that would eat compared to my filly she eats about a flake am and pm. Bales are100 pound bales so one bale lasts her forever. We don't have irrigation rights so have to buy but always have here last 2 to 3 years now.

@ rusty so like feeding one cow probably

I understand...but I don't think you're going to get a nice horse like what you want, for a thousand dollars or eighteen hundred dollars.

I wish people could easily do that, but in that low priced market, there are a lot of 'problems for sale'. I'm really the most concerned about you having the right horse to bring back your confidence and give you an enjoyable experience...maybe even open doors to new experiences.

Here is some other pics the owner of the Percheron/QH cross sent me this evening. I did talk to him on the phone and he is willing to make arrangements possibly but wants someone to come and see the horse/ride and go from there. The owner did say this use to be an ahmish (sp) persons horse but they have had this horse for 4 year now and he is 11/12 years old now. I thought I remember a thread about those hard working horses? On dreamhorse her weight is 1450 per the listing done by current owner and 16.2 hands. The owner said my weight would not even begin to be a problem for this horse she could handle so much more per owner.

She's gorgeous! I would definitely take a look at her. I know $3000 is a lot, but they may be flexible and you might be able to get them down to $2500 or even $2000 if you are really lucky. Or if she is a good match, you may just buy her anyways despite the price. That's what happened with our one gelding. We had a limit set of $2500 and our guy came along at $3800. We liked him so much that we spent the money anyways. It turned out to be a good choice in the end.
