May trade for a new horse thoughts please?

Remember, back in the old days before big, airy slant load trailers, they had small, narrow metal trailers some of which were slant load. Large horses rode in them all the time.

My new Percheron gelding arrived this morning in a non-slant trailer. He's about 17 HH and 1600 lbs. Rode from Michigan to Virginia with frequent breaks, and arrived tired but fit as a fiddle. It was what is commonly referred to in this area as "thoroughbred height". But still, I think you'll be OK with him in a regular trailer.

Since you would really, really wanna try the horse out in person before buying, what about you just go there WITH YOUR TRAILER and see how he loads/fits? That would totally resolve the problem. And honestly, unless he has trailering 'issues' to start with, I think the chances are very very slim there'd be any problem with your trailer unless it is UNUSUALLY tiny. (Plain ol' regular normal straight-load trailers typically do fine for larger horses, what do you think most horses rode in for much of the 60s/70s/80s?

).

You could either have him vetted first, if you were going to have a minimalistic eyes-heart-lungs type exam and would be philosophical about kissing that $ goodbye if you did not like him in person; or visit him first with your trailer and then (if you like him enough to want to buy him) have him vetted without you being present (ideally you would be available by the phone during the exam) and if he seems like a good bet then drive back out and get him, or pay the seller or a transporter to deliver him.

I know it's some extra hours of driving, but unless you live somewhere that cheap sound weight-carrying beginner horses are real thick on the ground, you very well may have to do this for ANY horse you buy, and this seems as reasonable a prospect as any, provided you like him and he vets ok.

I did send her pics and measurements of the trailer just now. Still not able to see any videos. Its in her hands right now to proceed. I suggested for her to use photobucket or something to send me the videos.

@ ewesheep I did think of a helmet already but I don't have one would have to get one. Then the question comes in would he wear it and not freak out about it going on or being on. Also just cause he can fit in the trailer does not mean he will load in it and remain calm if he is not use to it, I really hope he does though. My husband does not think it will be a problem as far as the horse fitting in there.

I live min. 3-5 hours away from this horse so not a quick trip to go over there to see if he will load in my trailer. I would like to know that he had no problems in the small trailer she mentioned if possible.

@ patandchickens I most def. will try him out and do vet visit at the same time and buy and take home probably the same day once I hear back from the owner I will proceed with making those arrangements and the trip.

I have family over there so we may visit first and leave my son to visit for some of winter break and bring the horse back if everything goes good.

@ sweetcheeks would you like to be there when I come over and do the vet check and try him out, since you meet and rode the horse and all so far? Also is there a good large farm animal vet over there that you would recommend to do the vet visit?

She was the vet I used for my horses. Annual shots for my first and then an emergency farm call when my girl Miss Kitty hated the mare in the stall next door and decided to let her know about it and put her leg through the stall wall scraping the skin off her chin requiring dressing changes.

She then did the vet check on the 17 yr old TWH I bought. Did a very thorough job. Cost was just over $100.00 because I opted not to do blood tests or X-Rays.

She then floated both of my girls teeth. Just a quick hasp job on 7 yr old Kitty but required sedation and electric tools on the older Dixie.

She is very thorough and gentle with the horses. Is a horse lover and owner herself. A little pricier than some and likes cash upfront but worth it in my opinion.

I would love to come meet you when you come to take a look.

I don't think Buddy is going to have an issue with any trailer based on how he stood still once loaded in the trailer last night. He did not shift around at all. Horses I've seen load will at least shift or move the back legs or feet around but he didn't do that at all. He wouldn't have an issue having a helmet put on either. Advertise on Craigslist to see if someone has one laying around they're not using.

In my opinion, I wouldn't be dragging my feet or leaving it in the sellers hands to proceed for too long. He REALLY is everything you say you're looking for at a great price. Not trying to pressure you but just stating the facts as I see them.

I would have bought him last night if I had the money. In fact, the seller asked me if I wanted him after he was loaded in the trailer.

Since seeing him and feeling that you're really not that interested in him (just my feeling mind you) he would make a great therapy horse. And then today i saw a show on military wives that featured a husband and wife who's husband that suffered from TBI and PTSD from serving in Iraq traveled to Gig Harbor to participate in a therapeutic riding program who was working with a large horse that reminded me of Buddy.

If you don't get Buddy, I plan to raise the funds to do so.

I have emailed and called 2-3 times on each today. I emailed this am and this evening. I also called 3 times this evening and getting voice mail. I did leave her a message. I have not heard from her at all today. I can't do anymore then that at this point. I most def. want him that is not the problem. I can come anytime. I am just not at this point getting communication from the owner to make arrangements.

I talked with the owner tonight and she is sending me the videos to my husbands cell phone but I have not got them yet.

We talked about payment and coming out there very soon. She says she is not at all concerned about the trailer and has a helmet for him I can take.
