Please go take your negative energies out elsewhere. Let's not get this thread locked.

So sorry, I tend to allow myself to be bated more than I like to admit, but on one thread there was a poster trying to bait people right and left and try to get a couple of threads locked, reporting didn't seem to help. But I finally wised up and when they started after me I quoted them and asked them something to the order of where is my billy goat? I need to get them over a troll bridge safely... It stopped the troller in there tracts and they never appeared for several weeks....

I am posting this mainly so that I can take out my frustration in a manner that can be discussed if desired and not be considered inappropriate (I hope. I am making an effort to not break any forum rules)
All I wish to say, with extreme clarity intended, is that this is not the time or place to be taking apart other people based on their religion. I have been picking up nasty and, frankly offensive comments and posts both public and private for the last 2 and a half days regarding religion. People are bantering about it when not appropriate and I have had enough of my opinion and other's being denounced like fiction because we do not follow one set of beliefs.
Please, just leave your religious talk out of this site.

I agree that people shouldn’t be rude to each other if they have a different religion. I know BYC tries to keep this site peaceful, so they don’t allow religion or politics, and I’ll always respect that so long as I am on this website. However, I think that people should be able to talk about controversial topics like religion or politics without acting like immature 12 year olds who freak out because someone has an opinion different than them. Why do some people always have to turn things into a fight? That’s what annoys me. I’ve seen it on other websites all the time, and even on this website.

I am a chronic thread derailer.
Especially if it is a topic I don't agree with.
I do not attack people based on their religion. Most of my family is DEVOUT Catholic, and I was proud to dress in my finest and attend their First Communions and their Confirmations. I took pictures, gave religiousy gifts, told them I was proud and I am-- proud of their convictions, their hearts, their determination to leave the world a better place.

I have no argument with religion.

I do, never, I have SERIOUS problem with bigotry. And racism. And misogyny. And xenophobia. And if people are casually bantering about any of THAT nonsense, you can bet your boots I am going to swarm in and 'ruin a good thing'.

With all kindness and respect intended, please give me a concrete example of specific threads that discuss all of those “isms” and “ologies” and such. And I don’t see “moderator” attached to your name, so I don’t see how you can be self-appointed to “swarm in and ‘ruin a good thing’.” That’s kind of like ruining it for everyone else so that one person can walk away self-satisfied and feeling “right”.

Folks, there are really two choices to be made here. Either scroll past what you don’t like, or flag a moderator and let them deal with it. That’s their thankless, unpaid job and they do it better on this site than any other sites I use. It’s often when some well-meaning but angry person storms in and drops the challenge pennant that threads get out of hand and shut down. I’ve had my patties smacked for posting an inappropriate response to someone who had been following me from thread to thread, picking fights until I defended myself with a one line sarcastic remark, which I’m assuming that person reported. Guess what.... the sun still came up the next day and the birdies still sang, and BYC went on. And it would have gone on even without me ever coming back. I learned. I learned how to use the blocking feature and my scroll button instead of my typing fingers. Not everything someone says needs an answer from someone who believes they know it better. Including me, which I seem to be doing on this thread, I must honestly say.......

So with that, now I’m turning on “unwatch this thread” for this thread (oh, a third option available to me to keep me out of trouble) and going back into my nice, quiet corner.

And I don't just walk away, because there are more people reading these threads than posting, and some of them may be young, or maybe not speaking English as their first language, and those people need to see that, in this specific thread, calling the dang police is NOT a normal response to hearing a language not your own!

I am not trying to change anyone's mind. They are a loss cause. But silence helps the oppressors, never the oppressed, and I will not silently read racist nonsense and then leave the thread.

Haters gonna hate. Be strong in your own beliefs and values (religious, ethical, moral, etc... Applies equally), and never let them win in your heart. The rest will take care of itself in due time. The wave always corrects itself.

My experience has been that the best way to shut toxic people down is to ignore them completely when they start going off. I know firsthand how impossible a task it is to not take their bait, but if you do, they just get emboldened to continue their garbage and probably escalate.

if you feel you must respond, approach it neutrally, like responding to an utterly clueless boss. "Yes, Um, thanks for that, now back on topic..." That way you don't get "fired", their input is neutralized in a subtle manner, and things should escalate less. Be objective, not emotional. Mileage varies, of course. We all have different limits of what we're willing to put up with, and we all have different triggers.

Worst case, keep using the report button. Mods do keep a fairly tidy house around here, and if people get reported enough times there are consequences.

Don't let the haters win. Not over chickens.
