I asked about integrating one chick and mother into my main group and was suggested to take them with the other hens under supervision for a short while. But that gotme thinking, what if I built a brooder coop inside the main coops run, so they can more easily do the see but no touch thing, and that. We have fencing, chicken wire, and a huge tanke thats both wider, and taller then our 70 gallon fish tank. So are there any other design ideas I could use??

Heres the set up we already have partially built. Still needs to be chicken wired at the top of the fence pieces, and a line of chicken wire along the bottom. We were gonna do it on the opposite side of my house, but due to coyote problems, we decided to do it inside the main run instead.

I dont know the exact measurements. But I know that its tall enou enough to have a heat lamp safemy in it, and wide enough to house a clutch of 12 ducklings. (Its bigger than what my teen ducklings stay in at night.
Do you have a tape measure? (doesn't everyone?!? :D ;) )

Not sure that tank will fit in that run......or that it is 'safe' to put a heat lamp in there.
Have seen folks use those tanks for shelters, but shedding rain and ventilation can be an issue.
Plus what was in the tank? Could be hazardous unless it was some kind of food product.

It worked as a water storage tank. It will need windows for ventilation, wich is in the plan. And the heat lamp is only for during the colder months or for chicks/ducklings, being raised without a mother.

We have extra metal shed siding if we need to build and extra roof to attatch to the.metal frame if needed, so not really worried about that. Its the specific design ideas, like widow size, how to make a secure door on it (both the most troublesome issues we need to come up with a solution for before even attempting to make it. All these barrells have been sitting and airing out in our yard for 7-10 yr, and we know their safe due to the fact that my grandpa was able to keep feeder fish in one for several years.

I recall another member using a similar tank (didn't know that's what it was) as a brooder so I know it can at least be a brooder. For a "see but don't touch" type setup you'd have to cut a lot of windows, probably on 2 or 3 sides, as the important thing is to let the adults be able to see the chicks.

Here are two of the birds that will go in it. We are currently housing them with another hen thats sitting on six duck eggs that are due to hatch very soon. They will also be kept in it.
