I want an incubator something terrible, but there is no way I can afford one. And I am afraid that if I make one it won't work well and I will just waste a bunch of eggs. I have a hen that has some chicks now and hopefully she'll go broody again in the spring, and then I will get to see what is really inside the delicious eggs. Lol. It seems like the cheapest way to grow my flock. I have the space for a lot of chickens, but have only a few currently. I don't want to get stuck with other people's cast offs off of craigslist either. If I hatch the eggs I know that the chickens aren't too old to lay and what not. My first chickens were a quartet, 3 hens and a rooster...The rooster and one of the hens are old, one hen is laying, and the third hen is too young to lay, although she looks to be big enough to start just anytime soon. Her comb and wattles are not developed though, and they aren't at all red. Then I got the hen and chicks, and I am afraid that most of the chicks are roos...
I am also getting a new silkie roo later today, so if nothing else I will have some very mixed chickens come summer time I hope. All I know is that if I plan on having enough eggs to eat i am going to need quite a few more chickens. The one that is laying does so reliably but one laying chicken isn't really enough with a family of 5. I mean jeez we can polish off 10 eggs at one sitting.
