Hdowden - the picture is from awhile back and I did treat for scaly leg mites. It sucked!! That rooster passed away in December 2010 but he lives on through his daughter there and I can't wait until next spring to keep the generations going!

Thiefpouter - it's not trimmed but the first winter I had him he did really poorly in the cold and I even had a heat lamp plus the vasseline on the comb and all the points got frostbite and in spring they fell off. He never was bothered by it, tough guy lol

yea mites of any kind suck. i'm sorry he passed away at least you do have one of his kiddos though. i had a pack of large dogs attack my birds and i lost a great cockerel but i manged to hatch 2 of his babies from his pullets that had only been laying for at least 2 weeks and so far both of the babies look like pullets.

Wow! Only two weeks?! I didn't even know they were already fertile then. That's good you wre able to do that. It's like a way to honor them. Do you have picture on this thread of them?

Howdy All!

we finally figured out who is laying~it's Ruby our small white leghorn, I was for sure it was Ezmae the bigger of the two. Ruby held out till 5pm today. She lays at the hottest part of the day, 12-1. My daughter was thrilled to know for sure. Loving the chicken business!!!!

Congrats on figuring it out. I still don't know who lays and who doesn't in my flock. Eventually I guess I'll just assume they all lay, and mystery solved.

SCratch that. I cam home to find the hens running to me squacking and melvin nowhere to be seen. That means something got him. one today one yesterday.
Awww.. I'm so sorry, I truly liked Melvin, especially his name, just something about it. Maybe I'll use it for one of my 10 roo's. Then in a sense Melvin will live on.

Sorry to but in. I have two cream legbars and have just hatched 5 white leghorns. I know I will prob end up with at least one leghorn roo. What I would like to know is will the chicks hatched between the leghorn roo and legbar hen would they still lay a blue egg or will it then become a white egg? Who carries the shell gene? Sorry still a novice here!
